185657145New York 1856. 39 broadsides labels ads calling cards etc. all relating to the business ventures of Isaac S. Clough a prolific inventor and salesman who concentrated mostly on the invention of novel insect traps but who also sold ash sifters pastry boards spring boot jacks combined knife spoon and fork utensils match safes hand lanterns an "automaton dancer" composed of two "negro-dancers" and string and more. At least six different insect traps are represented including a Premium Clockwork Pillar & Cage Fly Trap and a Clock-Work Revolving Light House Fly & Mosquito Trap. The largest item is a broadsheet 9.25" x 12" with a "Clough's Reporter" newsletter on one side and a large engraved illustration for a Suspension Cage New Fly-Trap on the opposite side. In addition to his inventions Clough also worked as a manufacturer distributor and a door to door salesman. Many of the ads are pointed at wholesalers and two items are printed calling letters notifying a household of an imminent visit by Clough to sell them fire shovels for example. A number of items cite Clough's number of medals and diplomas earned with the number peaking at 19 and 33 respectively. Aside from this small change in accolades it is difficult to date most of the material. "Clough's Reporter" is dated 1860 one manuscript letter from the then governor of Massachusetts Alexander H. Rice congratulating Clough for his success in business dated 1856. The calling letter from the Iron Clad Can Co. is dated 1876. The majority of the material is likely printed between the late 1850s and the early 1870s. Also included are a few New York banknotes signed by Clough and a receipt on letterhead for a tombstone ordered by him for Cypress Hills Cemetary. We could find little on Clough's life beside the fact that he appears to have been based in Brooklyn NY. A few chips and holes in some items but most generally very good and an interesting group reflecting the world of late 19th century American industry.

hardcover books

1778WRCAM41363Virginia 1778. One folded sheet. Approximately 550 words. Tanned at folds. Some ink burn through page. An embossment on one side reads "Washington County." A small closed tear affects approximately six characters. A manuscript land deed written by Isaac Cox for the sale of land to John Decker. In the deed Cox refers to "Yohogania County" a Virginia county created in 1776. The county included much of south-western Pennsylvania and overlapped with Pennsylvania's own western claims. The land in question is "on the river Ohio and bounded on the East by lands of Thomas Pollack and on the North by lands of William McMahan said land goes by the name of the Mingo Bottom containing four hundred acres." Mingo was a term for the Native Americans mostly Iroquois who had been displaced and settled in the northern Ohio river basin. Modern-day Mingo Junction lies in the far rnorthern pan-handle of West Virginia north of Steubenville Ohio and would have had close associations with Washington County Pennsylvania than Virginia. This association would explain why in 1806 a Washington County clerk approved the deed. unknown books

182018041717London: Printed for Thomas Boys of Ludgate Hill printed by Thomas Davison Whitefriars 1820. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Cruikshank Isaac Robert. Quarto size 212 pp. not matching pagination see below with 12 aquatints by Isaac Robert Cruikshank. A humorous collection of sketches exalting through parody the merits of the thrifty. The writing although very much a parody contains many nuggets of truths which illuminate how little the world has changed in the about 200 years since the book's publication: "Money money alone though it has been unaccountably neglected by authors strangers perhaps to its very name and still more to its practical use and management. . .is the mainspring of all human action want wish and desire." The author goes on to state that it is the desire of "the Save-all Club" to keep "the Kind and Benevolent Reader" out of the grip of poverty through thrift. The "Rules of the Club" provide amusing proof of such virtue: Rule VI "The smallest superfluous expense is not only a reproach to a member but he may be fined by the Committee for the use of the poor"; and Rule IV "As a new coat never fails to attract animadversion in the Club the members are requested to avoid that singularity as much as possible. If it prove that the coat is only turned the owner shall dine that day GRATIS".

Isaac Robert Cruikshank 1759-1856 was a popular English caricature artist and cartoonist and like his brother George is known for his pioneer work in the history of comics and comic strip cartoons. He collaborated often with George who is better known for his work with Charles Dickens.

This edition was originally issued in boards and had pp. 39-42 87-110 and 163-178 omitted as is the case in this edition and all known editions and which is explained in a footnote appearing on p. xvi: "The reader will perceive an hiatus after p. 38 another after p. 86 and a third after p. 162. Some digressions occurred in those places on subjects too abstruse to be generally interesting; they have therefore been withdrawn; but in consequence of a temporary absence of the author the suppression took place after the work was printed. As the connexion of its parts is not disturbed it is hoped that the liberty thus taken will be tolerated with indulgence." Additionally this copy has plate no. 11 bound as the frontis instead of being bound at p. 186. Each plate is marked "Designed and Etched by I. which appears as a "J" at this date in keeping with the Latin tradition R.
