I have the honour to be Sir Your humble servant Isaac Coffin Admiral' Admiral of the Blue Sir Isaac Coffin 1st Baronet GCH 1759-1839 was an officer of the Royal Navy who served during the American War of Independence and the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Coffin was born in Boston and served in the navy on a number of ships during the War of Independence. Coffin Bay and Greenly Island in South Australia were named in honor of Sir Isaac Coffin by the British explorer Matthew Flinders in 1802. The Coffin School on Nantucket established with funds provided by Sir Isaac Coffin was established in 1827. Known as the Admiral Sir Isaac Coffin Lancasterian School this educational institution was funded by Coffin for the purpose of "promoting decency good order and morality and for giving a good English education to youth". First edition 1810. The first volume is opening with the introduction of this enlarged second edition and preface for the first edition. A detailed description of highly attractive eight plates including Arabic alphabets Qufic Arabic-African early Qufic examples early Arabic-African a cursive example from Tripoli comparative early cursive scripts of Hebrew and Arabic from Tripoli a fragment of a letter of the Moroccan Emperor to Louis XIV etc. from an ancient Quran manuscript and other material. Table of contents for the first volume. The first and second volumes consist of classic grammar rules in Arabic. De Sacy was a French nobleman linguist and orientalist. In 1781 he was appointed councilor in the cour des monnaies and was promoted in 1791 to be a commissary-general in the same department. Having successively studied Semitic languages he began to make a name as an orientalist and between 1787 and 1791 deciphered the Pahlavi inscriptions of the Sassanid kings. In 1792 he retired from public service and lived in close seclusion in a cottage near Paris till in 1795 he became the first and only professor of Arabic in the newly founded school of living Eastern languages École speciale des langues orientales vivantes. During this interval Sacy studied the religion of the Druze the subject of his last and unfinished work the Exposé de la religion des Druzes 2 vols. 1838. He published the following Arabic textbooks: Grammaire arabe 2 vols. 1st ed. 1810 Chrestomathie arabe 3 vols. 1806 Anthologie grammaticale 1829. In 1806 he added the duties of a Persian professor to his old chair and from this time onwards his life was one of increasing honor and success broken only by a brief period of retreat during the Hundred Days. He was perpetual secretary of the Academy of Inscriptions from 1832 onwards; in 1808 he had entered the corps législatif; he was created a baron of the French Empire by Napoleon in 1813; and in 1832 when quite an old man he became a peer of France and regularly spoke in the Chamber of Peers Chambre des Pairs. In 1815 he became rector of the University of Paris and after the Second Restoration he was active on the commission of public instruction. With Abel Rémusat he was joint founder of the Société asiatique and was inspector of oriental typefaces at the Imprimerie nationale. In 1821 he was elected a member of the American Antiquarian Society. 1860601691Salem Massachusetts 1860. Unbound. Very Good. A collection of autobiographical writings retained by two prominent seamen father and son from Salem Massachusetts. The archive was compiled by the son Isaac Bullock 1800-70: a self-taught scholar and artist who first went to sea aboard fishing vessels and later as chief mate aboard ships owned by the famous Salem merchant Joseph Peabody. As he recounts in a manuscript note on his father's 1799 Seaman's Protection Certificate: his father "died of yellow fever July 1800 in his 25th year on a voyage to Havana - when I was about 3 months old." The Certificate issued to protect American sailors from the British practice of impressment is signed by Benjamin Lincoln: a famous Major General during the Revolutionary War as George Washington's second in command he formally accepted the British surrender at Yorktown and the first United States Secretary of War.<br /> <br /> Also included is the elder Isaac Bullock's shipboard account of a meteor shower written in manuscript on a quarto sheet titled: "Some particular remarks of the appearance of the sky on the 12 November 1799 at sea - in Latt. of 49:20 North & Longt. of 22:00 West." This was the first recorded meteor shower in North America by American astronomer Andrew Ellicot who had witnessed it from a ship off the Florida Keys. Bullock witnessed it "on the Brig Helen Andrew Haraden Master - from Boston bound to London": "At 4 am being my watch on deck . I saw with astonishment the stars shooting or otherwise falling repeatedly from the sky down to the horizon as if they were compelled to leave their native abodes and dwell in the lore lower world. Some leaving after them a stream of fire which continued in the sky for the space of a minute . These continued shooting or otherwise falling till day light . we could see their blaze shooting in every direction till almost sun rise. What it is foreboding we cannot tell . ." Tipped onto the 1799 quarto manuscript sheet are several smaller sheets of appended manuscript notes and comments by Bullock's son dating from the early 1850s including a pencil sketch portrait of the great German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt who had observed the meteor shower from Central America.<br /> <br /> The rest of the archive consists of five gatherings of miscellaneous autobiographical writings and musings compiled by the son Isaac Bullock in which he relates various notable voyages including being pursued by an armed pirate ship "off the double headed shot Keys Cay Sal Bank" and barely surviving a shipwreck in the English Channel. <br /> <br /> Also included are accounts of two trips to California he twice spent time prospecting and mining on the South Fork of the American River first in 1850 at Salmon Falls and then in 1852 at Mormon Island: ". in 1849 the gold Crusade to California enticed me to try if Fortune would smile on me as a Miner. I shipped as 2d mate of ship Nestor of Salem for San Francisco and started from Boston in the autumn of '49 with a large number of passengers bound to See the Elephant! - I saw him! and have survived the sight! . A year of privation and excessive labour broke me down in a long fever and in partial recovery I started for home - Returned through the Nicaraguan route and escaping its perils and privations I once more reached home .". Soon thereafter he decides to try his luck in the mines again: "hoping for better success . I landed in Aspinwall traveled on foot through the dense tropic forest to Panama losing all my baggage by robbers . At last I reached San Francisco again . ."<br /> <br /> Most if not all of Bullock's reminiscences and musings were written and compiled upon his return from California: one manuscript is dated 1853 and another 1862. He was well read in classical literature and ancient history and comments on Alexander von Humboldt and Hester Thrale in the manuscripts. When not abroad he lived in Salem where some his other papers are held at the Peabody Essex Museum.<br /> <br /> An entertaining and historically important collection of writings documenting the lives of two prominent seamen who sailed out of Salem when it was among the most significant seaports in America. A small archive of about 23 manuscript documents relating to Jerome Clark’s Company of Cavalry also known as the “Light Dragoons†at Cooperstown New York dating from 1808-14. The collection includes a few manuscripts written and signed by Lieutenant Isaac Cooper elder brother of James Fenimore Cooper who was a member of the Cavalry and served as its Secretary. Contemporary folds some modest soiling a few scattered short tears to the edges of the larger folio sheets very good or better overall.<br /> <br /> An interesting cache of documents that sheds light on a little known Cavalry company in upstate New York. Most of the documents date from 1814 and relate to a general meeting of the Cavalry’s officers and upcoming annual Company parade. Also included are three variant copies of the Company’s Muster roll. In addition to the Isaac Cooper documents the archive includes references to and likely autograph signatures of several other prominent persons at Hartwick and Cooperstown such as Major Van Rensselaer and the papermaker Bethel Todd.<br /> <br /> In his 1823 novel The Pioneers set in the Cooperstown “Templeton†of the early 1790s James Fenimore Cooper named the village’s principal tavern “The Bold Dragoon.†The question as to whether the name was taken after Clark’s Light Dragoons remains an intriguing possibility that would warrant further research. A VERY SCARCE ISSUE OF THESE IMPORTANT MATHEMATICAL LECTURES. These algebraic lectures given by Newton at Cambridge were first published by William Whiston in 1707. Whiston “extracted from Newton a somewhat reluctant permission to print it. Among several new theorems on various points in algebra and the theory of equations Newton here enunciates the following important results. He explains that the equation whose roots are a solution of a given problem will have as many roots as their are different probable cases.He extends Descartes rules of signs to give limits to the number of imaginary roots.The most interesting theorem contained in the work is his attempt to find a rule analogous to that of Descartes for real roots by which the number of imaginary roots of a equation can be determined.†Later with the idea of stimulating annotations to the work Gravedsande published SPECIMIN COMMENTARII IN ARITHMETICAM UNIVERSLAEM; and Maclaurins’s ALGEBRA seems to have been written in response to this. It was financed to find the fate of the lost John Franklin expedition it was lead by Elisha Kent Kane. pack ice in 1855. While three members of the crew were lost the epic journey of the expedition set a new to record for northward penetration delineated 960 miles 1540 km of unexplored coastline north of 82° latitude and discovered the long-sought open Polar Sea. Kane collected valuable geographical climate and magnetic observations before abandoning the brig Advance the survivors inspired the public with the tale of their survival. This plate is from from Volume XII of the quarto edition of twelve volumes were published from 1855 to 1861 as exploration and survey reports became available. These volumes contained not only the survey maps and elevations but a monumental collection of scientific reports on geography geology zoology botany and ethnology of the Native American tribes. The surveys also included 11 artists to record the landscape and indigenous peoples of the west. The twelve volumes were disorganized in publication with no overall all arrangement or indexing. Some of the plates and maps referred to in volumes were published in other volumes various reports were also published out of sequence relating to the four routes. Preliminary reports published were updated in latter volumes. From Wagner-Becker-Camp In 1853 Senator Gwin of California lead the inclusion of Congressional funding for 1853-54 of a series of surveys to determine the best and most economical railroad routes from the Mississippi River to the Pacific coast. The act directed the Secretary of War Jefferson Davis to plan and direct Army topographical engineers to conduct surveys of four routes. The first was between the 47th and 49th parallels generally along the Lewis and Clark route to the Pacific. The Second route between the 37th and 39th parallels was promoted by Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri. The Third route was along the 35th parallel. The Fourth route was promoted by Secretary Davis along the 32nd parallel that followed Emory's 1846-47 reconnaissance.<br /> <br /> The illustration "Awaiting the Return of Mr. Tinkham" was done to support part of the report narrative by Stevens starting on p. 127 of the report. Mr. Tinkham was one of several civilian members of the survey that fanned out along the general route to identify better terrain for a railroad line. They were generally accompanied by Native American guides the knew the terrain. Mr. Tinkham proceed without a guide and became disoriented for a number of days before finding his way back to the camp. <br /> <br /> John Mix Stanley 1814-1872 was an artist-explorer American painter of landscapes and of Native American portraits and tribal life. In 1842 he traveled to the West to paint Native Americans and spend the next ten years painting and exhibiting in eastern cities and the Smithsonian. During the Mexican War in 1846 he was a draftsman for the Corps of Engineers assigned to Colonel Kearney's expedition to California and Oregon Territory. He produced maps and illustrations for the Army. After the war he spent time in Hawaii painting the Royal family native life and landscapes. In 1853 Stanley was appointed the chief artist to Isaac Stevens survey expedition for a Pacific railroad route from St. Paul to Puget Sound the Northern Survey. During the survey he produced the stunning 70 illustrations and fold out panoramas in the Stevens report. When he returned to Washington in 1854 he produced an exhibition of his paintings and large panoramas of western scenes from the Northern survey. from Wiki and Samuels in part. Thomas H. While courts of law kept the intimate details from the wider public newspapers books almanacs and a host of printed material were less restrained though leaving little to the imagination to whom the subject of rape was of prurient interest. XVI 250; 1 1 blank 264 pp. First Dutch edition of a beautifully illustrated work on the Japanese festive ceremonies and customs. The work was written by Isaac Titsingh 1745-1812 then Head of the Dutch Factory at Decima the only place in Japan from where connections with the rest of the world were maintained until far into the 19th century. Titsingh was allowed to visit the Japanese court several times and is therefore one of the very few European observers and eye-witnesses of Japanese culture and customs in the 18th century.The first volume consists of essays on Japanese marriage and funeral ceremonies an account of "dosia" powder and some notes on the works of Confucius. It is concluded by a catalogue of books manuscript plans and artefacts collected by Titsingh. The second volume includes a series of anecdotes about the shoguns followed by several short essay amongst others on seppuku ritual suicide and Japanese poetry ending with explanations of the plans of the Dutch and Chinese factories at Nagasaki. The plates show a wedding ceremony a volcanic eruption of Mount Asama and the Dutch Factory at Decima.Titsingh was a diplomat historian and merchant who had a great interest in Japan. He moved to the East Indies in 1766 and stayed for most of his life. He spent a total of three years and eight months in Japan between 1778-1788 and amassed a large collection of authentic source materials on Japan during this time including printed books manuscripts prints maps city plans and coins. He came back to Holland in 1809 but quickly moved to Paris on account of the political situation. In Paris he began preparations for a monumental work on Japan based on the artefacts in his collection as well as his own notes but he died suddenly in 1812. When his son Willem went bankrupt he sold his father's collection which was then scattered all over Europe. Both a French and English publisher must have acquired some of the material as selections of it were printed in both countries. They were published in two volumes in Paris as Cérémonies usitées en Japon pour les mariages et les funérailles 1819 and Mémoires et anecdotes de la dynastie regnante des Djogouns 1820. The London edition Illustrations of Japan 1822 which was only printed in one volume was not a direct translation of the French works but clearly used the same source material. The present Dutch version is a translation of the English edition. Due to the impact of his collection and scholarly activities Titsingh can be seen as the founder of European Japanology.The boards of both volumes are somewhat scratched the spine of both volumes has cracked but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact. The first and last two leaves of each volume have browned around the edges likely from a past protective wrapper the work is slightly browned and foxed throughout the final quire and the two plates in volume 2 have detached but are still present annotations in pencil in the margins on some of the leaves.
