Todhunter was one of the best-known British mathematicians of the nineteenth century. He was a lecturer in mathematics at Cambridge from 1849 until his death in 1884. Although he made some original contributions to mathematics his reputation largely rests upon his work in the history of mathematics; he wrote several influential books on the subject including the present volume. The book was intended to extend the well-known treatment of the history of the calculus by Woodhouse through the middle of the nineteenth century and includes coverage of the work of Lagrange Gauss Poisson Cauchy and others. An exceptional copy of this important work in the history of mathematics with an interesting association and scarce thus. An attractive Near Fine copy with minor wear to the extremities.
