1848026108Boston: Little Brown 1848. First . Hardcover. VG. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Complete with alll 16 plates 2 of which are attributed to Godfrey N. Frankenstein 1820-1873. Original dark brown cloth binding with original decorative gilt titles on the front cover. This particular example also boasts the ownership signature Fully investigated & referenced of Hiester Henry Muhlenberg 1812-1886 He was a member of the distinguished Muhlenberg family of Pennsylvania. And the bookplate where he/his family apparently donated the volume many decades ago 'The Reading Public Museum and Art Gallery' both on the inside of the front cover. Inside the rear cover is a small trapazoidal piece of manilla card where assumed an inventory card was kept. Book was clearly NOT for public viewing. Plates are in lovely near fine to fine condition with none of the usual foxing as seen in most examples. All are perfect for framing or to keep whole for propserity. The corners & spine ends a bit worn. A very nice example of this cornerstone to any White Mountains Book Collection. Oakes was drowned in the same year of this publication 1848 somewhere between East Boston & Boston. One wonders what he would have done to top this masterpiece had he lived. In the original quarter calf binding with paper to the boards. Externally generally smart. Extremities are a little worn with some off of paper and bumping. A small amount of loss of leather to the head and tail of the spine. Light marks and rubbing to the boards and light rubbing to the leather. Minor bump to the head of the rear board. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with the occasional spot. Small closed tear to the folding map. As an apprentice he worked on plates for Abraham Rees's <em>Cyclopedia</em> but later became a nonconformist pastor in Ongar Essex where he brought up and educated his large family. After the success of several works on morality published by his wife Ann Taylor 1757-1830 and his daughters Ann and Jane Isaac started publishing his own instructional manuals on subjects such as character scripture Bunyan British and European biographies etc. Many were illustrated with his own engravings.</p><p>"Isaac Taylor also issued with engravings from designs mostly by himself a few were by his son Isaac a series of topographies 'for little tarry-at-home travellers.'" DNB</p><p>Rebound by John Robinson in blue leather gilt title on spine green marbled boards book block solid new endpapers. Interior mostly very clean and bright text pages and plates in very good condition rich handcolour to the woodcuts. Some of the places included are Buckinghamshire Staffordshire Dorestshire Cornwall Oxford Essex and Lincolnshire. Isaac Taylor was a historical writer artist and inventor. He started out his career by illustrating some of his sister's Jane Taylor's books Jane being the person who wrote the words for 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'. Isaac also wrote 'The Elements of Thought' 'The Process of Historical Proof' 'Home Education' and 'The Physical Theory of Another Life'. With a folding frontispiece of a map of England and Wales and a further twenty-eight plates. Collated from Copac complete. In the original publisher's quarter roan binding with paper to the boards. Externally sound. Light rubbing to the boards causing a little discolouration. A little bumping to the extremities. Slight rubbing to the joints and to the spine. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot and with light offsetting to some pages due to the plates. Prior owner's ink inscription to the title page 'A. W. G'.
