"According to the Travels Weld landed at Philadelphia in November 1795 from which he made excurisions in all directions. On one of these he visited Baltimore Washington Alexandria and Mount Vernon. On another he moved west to York and Lancaster the northern neck of Virginia and Williamsburg and Norfolk apparently going as far south as the Dismal Swamp. At Williamsburg he noted that the captial was crumbling to pieces that William and Mary was a grammar school rather that a college that the church was out of repair and that the hospital for the insane was not well regulated. On his return he journeyed to Richmond and west to the mountains and as was usual with travelers he described Rock Bridge. After coming back to Philadelphia he went to Canada. Illustrated with 16 folding views plans and maps; xix 1 427; viii 376 pp. Minor aging and some darkening to a few pages and some foxing to one plate. Near fine condition. Weld an Irishman came to America in 1795 when he was nineteen. This work narrates his travels through the former colonies along the eastern seaboard and the Canadian provinces. Very popular at the time it was published Weld comments on the population and social habits and customs of the people he saw. According to Howes Weld seemed to prefer Canada to the States. Compared to the similar works of this period Weld seems to be fairly objective on most things. However whether or not his observation that Americans lose their teeth prematurely is accurate would be hard to substantiate. Contains several interesting views of Niagara Falls Mt. Vernon Bethlehem PA and a large map of the northern portion of the United States with inset of the southern States.</p> John Stockdale hardcover

Two volume set. 427 375pp. Octavo 22 cm Nicely rebound in tan 3/4 quarter calf over the original marbled leather boards. Backstrip has red and black gilt stamped leather labels with gilt rules. Floral gilt stamped pattern to the rest of the backstrip. The front board of volume 1 is nearly detached and the front free endpaper map and title page are detached but present. Both volumes internally clean. Advertisements have been removed from both volumes. The large folding map 'Part of the United States of North America' measures 48 cm by 43 cm and is present at the front of volume one. Large map shows America as it was then known with the western edge being Detroit and Kentucky. The state lines are hand colored. A few short closed tears at the folds. Volume one also contains seven views two plans Washington and Quebec and a map of upper and lower Canada. Volume two contains five views four of these are about Niagara Falls. Nice early American travel narrative by this Irish writer and artist. Howes W235. Sabin 192541. Weld's Travels Through the States of North America and the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada was an instant success. It went through several editions and was translated into several different languages. It is worth noting that Weld's work is more favorable towards Canada than it is towards the United States. In early 20th century cloth; lacking the advertisements called for by Howes; all plates are present. Bindings are a little worn at the spine ends with some fraying to head of the spine of Volume I otherwise only light edgewear; endpaper split at the hinges but have been discreetly and neat reglued and are strong; early pencil markings—mostly small hands with pointing fingers in the margins; list of places with pencil check marks probably more recent; light and foxing throughout but more so around the folding plates and maps even here it is not very distracting. This is a fairly nice copy in 20th century binding of a very good early travel narrative. <br /> <br /> Originally issued by Stockdale in 1799 this is an early edition of a frequently reprinted travel narrative this edition with striking views of Niagra Falls Hudson River Natural Bridge in Virginia and more. Clark writes "It is obvious from this volume that he was a loyal Englishman with enough aristocratic prejudice not to understand the American frontiersmen. His attitude is indicated by his closing remarks that he left the United States 'without a sigh and without entertaining the slightest wish to revisit ti.' In the cities he mixed with the best society and met the important leaders of the country including Washington and Jefferson. Of them he was less critical" Clark Old South II 132. In addition to the brief discursus on English finances inserted between the second and third parts of the main treatise our copy includes the usually missing supplement pp. 369-384 "Addition au Traité de la Circulation et du Crédit. Mémoire pour la suppression du Belasting" along with the concluding errata leaf.<br /> <br /> The present Treatise is a refutation of the physiocrats who had advocated a primarily agricultural economy. Arguing against Hume de Pinto seeks to defend the economically productive role of the national debt which he sees exemplified in the current British system. While Marx notoriously described de Pinto as "the Pindar of the Amsterdam stock exchange" for his advocacy of speculation Werner Sombart regarded him as the "beginner of the modern age of economics and the first to understand the growth of credit" EJ. De Pinto's other works include Essai sur le luxe and Du jeu de cartes both reprinted in the present work and the later Precis de arguments contre les matérialistes The Hague 1774.<br /> <br /> The main treatise is divided into four parts followed by six brief works: 1. The final opuscule which appears in relatively few copies of the Traité is published here for the first time.<br /> <br /> Isaac de Pinto 1717-1787 was the scion of a wealthy Sephardic family which traced their origins back to Portugal and had emigrated to the Dutch Republic. "He had a broad education and had mastered many languages in which he corresponded with famous philosophers and maintained contact with the European elite of his day including the court of the Dutch stadholder. In 1748 he helped to finance Stadholder William IV's war against France" Bernfeld & Wallet. "For his services in arranging favorable terms for English trade in India at the Treaty of Paris which ended the Seven Years' War 1756-63 Pinto was lavishly rewarded by the East India Company a few years later 1767" EJ. His correspondents included David Hume and Denis Diderot. De Pinto made a name for himself when he responded to Voltaire's mocking article on the Jews which appeared in the latter's Dictionnaire Philosophique with his Apologie pour la nation juive Amsterdam 1762. The beginner of the modern age of economics First edition of "one of the great documents in the history of political economy" Encyclopaedia Judaica p. 533 arguing that an expanding system of national debt would lead to economic prosperity. Written in refutation of the physiocrats the treatise contended that public debt when managed responsibly could support commercial growth by increasing liquidity credit and monetary circulation. Britain Pinto argued showed the model for a high debt as a bedrock of economic success. Beyond this he defended credit and circulation as the basic form of economic endeavour against what he termed the physiocrats' "frenzy of the soil". Implicitly he was defending the Jews who had long been denigrated for their role in the financial sphere. One of the most prominent Jewish economic writers of the 18th century Pinto's importance has long been recognized. "Marx called him 'the Pindar of the Amsterdam stock exchange' for his advocacy of speculation. Werner Sombart regarded him as the beginner of the modern age of economics and the first to understand the growth of credit. Isaac Watts was a brilliant and prominent English Poet Theologian and hymn writer of the time and this book is considered one of his most influential and popular works entitled; "The World to Come: or Discourses on the Joys or Sorrows of Departed Souls at Death and the Glory or Terror of Resurrection. To which is prefixed An Essay toward the proof of a Separate State of Souls after Death. The book was first published in 1777 in Edinburgh by W. Gray & J. Bell more than 30 years after Watts' death. Condition: 8vo. 441 pages 2 pages of ads - gorgeous calf leather binding with decoration stamped in blind to the front and rear gilt stamped titles to the spine with marbled endpapers. The book is square the binding is tight. Toning and foxing to interior pages. A small closed tear to the upper title page along with a previous owner's name in ink a few chips along the outer edge and a creasing to the upper corners of a few pages.
