185720123Good. 1857. Hardcover. A gift inscription on the first leaf of this notebook indicates it was given by Isaiah Winslow Ayer to his wife Jane Morton Ayer in October 1857 in Boston Mass. Isaiah Ayer was an Allopathic physician a Harvard grad and within three years would be thrust into the Army's attempt to thwart a northern insurrection. After the war Ayer wrote a book about his experiences: "The Great North-western Conspiracy." This book interesting Notebook contains engravings and illustrations taken from Graham's Magazine Sartain's Magazine Peterson's Magazine etc.on every other page. There are a couple of color illustrations as well. There is a blank leaf between each illustration for the owner to write on. Jan Ayer recorded several poems and hymns in this book in ink; two are dedicated to children that she lost when they were still young: Florence and Clarence. Ayer moved to Chicago and then Grand Rapids MI after the war. It is bound in full black leather all edges are gilt and there are gilt spine and cover decorations; raised spine bands and spine title in gilt: The Liesure Hour. Most pages are free of foxing there is some marginal smudging to som pages; many of the tissues protecting the illustrations are torn. The outer front joint is split but the inner binding is holding the front cover; it would benefit from rebacking. It could be handled as is if done very carefully. There is wear to the extremities but the covers and the spines are intact. Please inquire if you would like more information. ; Engravings; 8vo 8"- 9" tall; Unpaginated pages . hardcover
