A fine copy of this work a classic of the art déco style by French writer and orientalist Franz Toussaint and illustrated by Janine Aghion 1894-1982 who worked with art déco forerunner Paul Poiret. Several of Aghion's striking costume designs are held at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Tall quarto. 32 colour and line-drawing illustrations including 13 full-page of which 2 heightened in silver by Janine Aghion. Fine map with beautiful vignettes by Adrien Toussaint Lallemand 1793 - c.1856 geographer and engraver at the Depôt de la Guerre. Lallemand was appointed at a precociously young age and later set up in business on his own the quality of his work assuring him of the continued business of the Depôt. <br> <br>Highly attractive map of the Ottoman Empire published at the outset time of the Crimean War 1853-1856. <br> <br>This item is held off-site. The author, one of Diderot's friends, denounces in this work a.o. death-penalty, which he considers a defiance of Natural Law. ' .... François-Vincent Toussaint and his famous book Les Moeurs, published in 1748 and condemned on 6 May of that year by the Parlement of Paris. Les Moeurs was one of the first (and therefore one of the boldest) works in the eighteenth century to set forth the arguments for a natural morality unbolstered by any religious belief or public cult' (Arthur M. Wilson, Diderot, pp. 53-54). 'Tout le monde, homme et femme, se piquant un peu de quelque sort d'esprit dans un certain monde, voulut voir ce livre. Chacun se demandait: Avez-vous lu le livre des Moeurs?
