Illustré d'un frontispice gravé représentant la Vertu foulant le Vice sous le regard de Dieu, ainsi que de culs-de-lampe en tête de chacun des trois livres et une gravure répétée sur le titre de chaque partie. François-Vincent Toussaint (Paris, 1715 - Berlin 1772) est un avocat, homme de lettres, traducteur et encyclopédiste français. Il est principalement connu pour cet ouvrage Les Murs, qui fut frappé d'interdiction dès sa parution en 1748 mais qui connut un succès considérable, malgré cette mise à l'index et sa condamnation par le Parlement de Paris à être brûlé par la main du bourreau. Il collabora aux premiers volumes de l'Encyclopédie de Diderot et D'Alembert, à laquelle il apporta des articles de jurisprudence. Barbier III, 322 décrit trois éditions parues en 1748, de collations différentes. Cohen 995 donne quant à lui 1747 pour date de l'originale et place cette édition de 1748 comme la seconde, identique à la première.
