Lacking only Combe no. 191.LA VIEILLE ARMEE FRANCAISE Armée de 1809:Ce nom recouvre un ensemble de 12 lithographies imprimées chez l'éditeur Motte d'Octobre 1820 à Février 1821. Ces pièces considérées comme parmi les meilleures de l'artiste dans le genre du costume militaire sont toutes rares ou très rares. Dans le catalogue du colonel de La Combe elles portent les numéros 187 à 195 197 199 et 201. Les numéros 196 1ère idée du numéro 195 200 première idée du numéro 199 et 198 n'ont été tirés qu'à 3 épreuves: elles sont donc rarissimes et on ne sait pas si elles existent encore; stricto sensu elles ne font pas partie de cet ensemble mais s'y rapportent directement.Dans le chapitre VI de sa biographie de l'artiste 1856 le colonel de La Combe écrit ce qui suit se rapportant à cette série:Ne retirant aucun avantage de ses nombreux travaux Charlet dut tenter la fortune près d'un nouvel éditeur. Il s'adressa à Motte qui demeurait alors rue des Marais. Motte excellent homme habile lithographe aimant les artistes ne fut pas pour Charlet un éditeur plus fructueux que ses prédécesseurs. C'est de son imprimerie que sont sortis plusieurs des plus beaux dessins de Charlet ; comme tant d’autres ils n'ont été tirés qu'à un très-petit nombre d’épreuves dans la conviction où était l'éditeur que ces épreuves ne seraient point vendues. La vieille Armée française suite de costumes d'Infanterie est une des plus énergiques créations de Charlet. Nous citerons entre autres le frontispice un vieux Sapeur le Sapeur en grande tenue le Porte–Drapeau ; ce sont des chefs-d’œuvre. S'ils les avaient copiés les statuaires de nos jours n'auraient pas donné si souvent ces types militaires ridicules qui décorent plusieurs de nos monuments. Paris: C. Motte, 1820-1821 hardcover

One of two pirated editions printed in Germany in the 1850's a marvelous album of views based on the work of Cuba's master lithographer Frederic Mialhe depicted in his Viaje Pintoresco al Rededor de la Isla de Cuba Havana 1847-1848; this edition with captions in Spanish only and without vignettes on the maps the other pirated edition was printed in either Berlin or Hamburg with tinted lithographs instead of the color lithographed plates as here the captions were in Spanish English and German and a series of vignettes were printed around the border of the two maps; the lithographs in this issue are much more detailed than in the other pirated edition. <br /> <br /> Perhaps the finest pictorial record of daily life in Cuba in the 19th century with port and city views of Havana countryside scenes a bullfight and a cockfight. This copy with all plates fully and beautifully color lithographed. Sabin 17748 for the other pirated edition which had only 26 plates. Though OCLC locates an equal number of the two editions this colored issue seems to be less common in trade. For an account of Mialhe's original edition which was printed in Cuba and the two German piracies see Emilio Cueto's Mialhe's Colonial Cuba Miami 1994 pp. 73-77.
