17329392<p>This is a great condition antique botanical print framed and hand-colored on handmade "laid" paper. Original 1732 copperplate engraving by Johann Jakob Jacob Dillenius. 1732 1st edition limited to 250 copies from Dillenius's two-volume botanical work "Hortus Elthamensis." The engraving is titled "Geranium batrachioides Bohem capsules nigris hirsutis" and has been colored by hand. Decorative gold frame with a wire securely attached at the back for hanging. A highly attractive piece perfectly suitable for display. The frame measures 17 3/4" tall x 16" wide. Professionally framed by "Einhorn Galleries - Antique Maps Rare Prints Historic Documents" in Connecticut per the label on the back. The Gallery has affixed a typed summary of the piece on the back see photo. Jakob Dillenius was a prominent German-born botanist who became the first Sherardian Professor of Botany at the University of Oxford in 1734. He is recognized for his meticulous botanical illustrations and for pioneering the study of "lower plants" like Mosses and fungi. His two volume work "Hortus Elthamensis" 1732 was a catalog of rare plants in the Eltham Garden of James Sherard. Dillenius drew and engraved all 324 plates himself. Please Note - An additional shipping charge will be required.<br /><br />Condition:<br />The picture is in overall Near Fine condition and would make for an excellent display piece. The engraving is clean with no notable condition issues. The frame is in nice condition with only a bit of minor chipping to the corners the chipping is only visible if looked at from the side of the frame and is only on the corners that sit flush with the wall. Fabricius war zweifacher Rektor der Universität Rostock und Leibarzt des dänischen Königshauses. "Faber: Dr. Jacob F. Fabricius ein Sohn des Bäckermeisters und Mitgliedes des Collegiums der Hundertmänner Heinrich Schmidt wurde zu Rostock am 28. August 1576 geboren besuchte die Schulen dort und zu Lüneburg studirte seit 1595 zu Rostock Medicin später zu Leipzig wo er poëta laureatus wurde und hielt sich dann vier Jahre lang bei Tycho de Brahe WS 1 in Uranienborg auf der Insel Hven auf. Hierauf durchreiste er Holland und England promovirte 1602 zu Jena und ließ sich als praktischer Arzt in Rostock nieder. Am 17. Januar 1607 ernannte ihn die verwittwete Herzogin Sophie von Mecklenburg zum Leibarzt am 10. Juni 1612 der Herzog Adolph Friedrich zum Professor der Medicin und höheren Mathematik an W. Lauremberg's WS 2 Stelle. 1637 wurde er als oberster königl. Leibmedicus nach Kopenhagen berufen welchem Rufe er unter Beibehaltung seiner Professur in Rostock folgte. Dort starb er am 14. August 1652. Von ihm: "Periculum medicum seu juvenilium foeturae priores" 1600. "Uroscopia s. de urinis tractatus" 1605. "Nonnulla de medicinae et philosophiae conjunctione". 1620. Soiling to page edges. Ink monastic inscription to front pastedown. Small upper corner section of the blank front free-endpaper has been neatly excised presumably to remove a prior owner name. Otherwise apart from slight creasing to a few page tips a very good copy - clean bright and unmarked - of this uncommon edition. ~UUU~ Jacob Merlo Horstius 1597-1644 born in Horst Holland from whence he derives his name was a prominent doctor of theology known as an effective preacher at the Lyskirchen in Cologne where he served as pastor. The Paradisus Animae which has gone through many editions in the original Latin since its 1644 first edition was long a favorite prayer book among Catholics. Several English translations appeared one as early as 1670 as 'Paradise of the Christian Soul.' It was translated into French by Nicolaus Fontane under the title 'Heures Chretiennes Tirnes de l'Ecriture et des Saints Peres.' In addition to his influential edit with commentary of the works of Thomas a Kempis author of 'Imitation of Christ' Horstius authored and edited numerous books including a highly respected commentary of Estius on the Pauline Letters the works of St. Bernard and this an often translated and reprinted collection of prayers for the Catholic faithful first published in Latin the year Horstius died 1644.
