Errata slip pasted to verso of A8 Vol. I. Contemporary panelled calf later rebacked contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces. Heavily rubbed some surface loss to boards corners exposed. Leaves lightly browned scattered spotting small marginal hole to leaf R8 of Vol. I very occasional early manuscript annotations. A 'poetical register' composed by Giles Jacob 1686-1744 best remembered for his legal writings. It catalogues a canon of English poets in alphabetical order. 1758159131758. 280 by 419mm. 11 by 16.5 inches. Engraved plan with original hand colour. A plan of Nagasaki from a Dutch edition of the Abbé Prévost's travel book the 'Histoire Generale des Voyages'. Prévost's work was an expansion of Thomas Astley's 'Voyages and Travels' compiled by Astley from sources including John Atkins Theodor de Bry and Jean-Baptiste Lavat. The first seven volumes of Astley's work were translated into French by the Abbé Antoine François Prévost 1697-1763. As well as translating Astley's work Prévost added a general history of discoveries and colonisation to his own lifetime as well as an overview of the historical sources he used. It was first published in Paris in 15 volumes the present edition from 1746-1761. The maps for the 'Histoire' were produced by Jacques Nicolas Bellin. They were re-engraved by Jacob van der Schley for the Dutch editions of the work. unknown

Shows Hormuz on the left side a part of the Island of Kishim the lower part of the Persian coast the Island of Hormuz with its fortress and the entrance of ships. Decorated with ships. "This map probably comes from Raynal's History of the East Indies and it was earlier published in Prevot's collection of voyages.". Qasimi p. 203. Jacob van der Schuere was a Dutch Golden Age writer. He was born in Menen but moved north to Haarlem where he became a schoolmaster and wrote educational books. In 1612 he published the work Nederduytsche spellinge which was a proposal for a comprehensive spelling of the Dutch language and in 1643 he published the math book Arithmetica oft reken-konst. Very Good. <br /> Johann Jacob Zimmermann 1642-1693 was a 17th-century German nonconformist theologian who published a number of treatises that spread fear amongst Lutheran churches – works that questioned the validity of biblical miracles through his astronomical and millenarianistic views One of his most controversial works was 'De Miraculis' a work in which Zimmermann sought to prove that even according the Fathers of the Church that all the miracles of Christ were only allegories d'Holbach p132 These reports along with the studies of Bernard Connor explained that the Gospel miracles could be explained by naturally occurring phenomena<br /> Zimmermann remained steadfast in his views against supernatural abilities and wonders not only in Jesus but in the apostles saints and mathematicians as well including Pythagoras Apollonius St Francis of Assisi St Dominic and St Ignatius of Loyola Because of this 'De Miraculis' and many other Zimmermann works were placed on the Index of Forbidden books In fact because of its controversial nature Zimmermann published it in Zurich under a pseudonym to separate the work from himself <br /> <br /> This copy is in brown boards with handwritten title on paper label on spine Ex-library from a college library but the only indications are ink stamps on ffep and title page Discreet ink signatures on front pastedown and top of title page But otherwise no marks at all Binding is tight and sound with just slight splits starting at spine corners and bumped corners<br /> Very rare with no other example of this edition for sale worldwide at present lii 447 pp. Petri Fox unknown

Woodcut frontispiece with death & a necromancer holding the mirror below is a Dutch city 22 half page woodcuts each of 4 titlepages has a different figural woodcut a few nice head- & tail-pieces and a nice initial capital. Small octavo laced through full vellum spine titled in ink 1" splits to foot of spine. Four Parts in one Volume. Frontis printed titlepage prelims all unnumbered but within the pagination 144pp; titlepage within pagination 112pp; 8pp pictorial titlepage contents 56pp; titlepage with poem on back 206pp. The woodcuts are charmingly primitive scenes of love duels & murder and at least 5 of them have the figure of Death coming for the protagonist as in the earlier dances of death. Partly in verse partly in dialogue and part in biblical texts the printer has used black letter italic and ordinary typefaces in double column single column double and single spacing and various sizes of type. Highly moral it also includes murder love interest and mayham as well as edifying verse collected from many sources. Dutch text throughout. Some signs of use with minor edge browning and 2 gatherings a bit proud. An amusing compilation of folk themes which made it quite popular in the 18th century Waller 1173 for a later edition. Lacking the plates of Mr Croxall and Mr John Philips therefore lacking two plates in total. With an introductory essay on the Rise Progress and Beauty of Poetry. With the errata leaf to the rear. This work discusses a large selection of poets such as Sir Philip Sidney Sir Richard Steele William Shakespeare Abraham Cowley and more. From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature history and music. He was a specialist on 17th century printer and bookseller Humphrey Moseley and began his unfortunately unfinished PhD dissertation on him. No author to title page although this work has been attributed to Giles Jacob. Giles Jacob's main literary reputation was for his legal writings. However he also dabbled in satire with his The Rape of the Smock a satire on Pope's Rape of the Lock. In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the boards and spine. Externally worn particularly to the joints and extremities. Loss to the head and tail of spine and cracks to the head of joints. Front board is detached but present with endpapers and frontispiece bound to pastedown. Internally binding is strained in places. Evidence of repair to the binding between pastedown and frontispiece. Blackburn Public Library Reference Department stamp to the verso of front endpaper. Shelf number stamp to the title page as well as library stamp . Repair to the title page leaf at top outer corner the same to the dedication leaf. Pages are age toned with instances of spotting throughout. Fair E Curll hardcover
