Description: "Windmills were ubiquitous in seventeenth-century Holland and they remain the best-known symbol of the Dutch landscape. Jacob van Ruisdael first depicted them as a precocious teenager and continued to represent all types in various settings until his very last years. Water mills in contrast were scarce in the new Dutch Republic found mainly in the eastern provinces particularly near the border with Germany. Ruisdael discovered them in the early 1650s and was the first artist to make water mills the principal subject of a landscape. His most celebrated painting Windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede at the Rijksmuseum and the J. Paul Getty Museums Two Undershot Water Mills with an Open Sluice are the centerpieces of this overview of the artists depictions of windmills and water mills. Both depended upon forces of nature for their operation but their use in the Netherlands and their place in seventeenth-century Dutch art differed considerably. This book examines their role in Holland and introduces readers to the pleasure of studying Ruisdaels images of them a joy conveyed by the English landscapist John Constable in a letter written to his dearest friend after seeing a Ruisdael painting of a water mill in a London shop: 'It haunts my mind and clings to my heart.' -- with a bonus offer-- . From the publisher: "The IsraeliWest-German Reparations Agreement from September 10 1952 is considered an event of paramount importance in the history of the State of Israel due to its dramatic and far-reaching implications in multiple spheres. Moreover this agreement marked a breakthrough in international law. It recognized the right of one country to claim compensation from another in the name of a people scattered around the globe and following events that took place at a time when neither polity existed. Post-Holocaust Reckonings studies this historical chapter based on an enormous variety of sources some of which are revealed here for the first time and it is the first comprehensive research work available on the subject. Researchers lecturers teachers students journalists politicians and laymen who are curious about history and political science might take a great interest in this book. The subject of indemnification for damages resulting from war or war crimes would also be of interest to societies and communities worldwide who have experienced or are currently experiencing human and material tragedies due to national ethnic or religious conflicts.
16923306804Lyon: Vander Aa 1692. One part moderately water-stained another with slight marginal worming three of the folding plates repaired. Eleven volumes duodecimo the first with four engraved folding plates and all eleven volumes embellished with charming ornamental title-pages; a handsome set in mid eighteenth-century dark panelled calf with original labels.

Attractively bound set of Cicero in eleven volumes noted as "respectable and correct" by Moss. The title-page boasts that the accuracy of the text arises from the editorial finesse of Dutch classical scholar Jacob Gronovius whose portrait appears as frontispiece to the first volume curiously the English literary lion Thomas Dibdin claimed the editorial attribution to Gronovius was spurious. Jacob Gronovius was the father of botanist Jan Frederik Gronovius correspondent and patron of Carl Linnaeus and the author of a treatise on the native plants and herbs of Virginia.

A charming set in an appealing early binding this is a considerable publication continuously paginated for a total of 3611 pages. The folding engraved plates include the detail of an epigraphic tribute to Cicero and numismatic relics relating to the famed Roman orator.

. Vander Aa unknown
