1874BB2328Amsterdam: G. Theod. Bom 1874. Pictorial Wrappers. Fine. Crown 8vo 180 x 128mm: 8pp with six color lithographs printed by Emrik & Binger Haarlem each with flaps that when flipped reveal a completely different image a ship at sea becomes Bedouins in the desert a volcano erupts into walruses in the Arctic Native Americans transform into explorers in the Rockies taking the viewer on a tour around the world. The accompanying text guides the reader through these twists and turns. Original burnt orange illustrated card wrappers printed in green gold and terracotta and lettered in black. A superbly preserved example of this fragile production all but pristine rare with Worldcat Discovery listing only one copy and LHD none. For more than 700 years book designers have been pushing back the boundaries of the two-dimensional page adding flaps and rotating parts to enhance the text most often in scientific literature. But only in the nineteenth century did movable flaps became a regular feature in children’s books. In the Netherlands ‘De nieuwe rijschool’ The new riding school published in 1856 was the first movable children’s book which reached their peak in the 1870s and 1880s. Gerardus Theodorus Bom 1814-1884 was a Dutch publisher of books in Amsterdam issuing such titles as Kindervreugd 1864 Robinson Crusoë c.1865 and Kunstenmakers at work 1875. The fairy tales include the title story Rapunzel Rumpelstiltskin and nineteen others.

Nielsen 1886–1957 was born in Denmark. He is best known for his work in the United States. He worked for the Walt Disney Company on the animated films Fantasia The Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty.

xii 13–310 pages. First trade edition first printing with the B date code on the copyright page. A near fine copy; for this version the plates are not protected with tissue guards and there is offsetting to the facing pages as a result. There are a couple of leaves with spots at the bottom margin. This copy has been rebound in full burgundy morocco with all edges gilt. The covers are delicately decorated with a wavy gilt border. The spine is divided into six panels with false bands; each panel is stamped in gilt. The endpapers are marbled paper with metallic gold ink highlights. The original cover and spine are laid down at the back.

Doran issued a 600-copy signed limited edition in 1925 with the text printed in two colors contemporaneous with the UK signed limited. That is the first US edition; this trade issue followed the next year based on newspaper reviews and therefore I assume does not have the publisher's logo on the copyright page—which is how Doran usually denotes a first printing. It is not technically the first edition. George H. Doran Company unknown

J.G. Haafner 1755-1809 started his literary activities very late in life. His first travel-book was published in 1806 in Haarlem. The importance of Haafner's eyewitness accounts is that they were done during the decay of the VOC. Terpstra in his analysis of Haafner's views on colonialism as expressed in his works comes to the conclusion that Haafner was an anti-colonialist a man before his time for his ideas were not to be topical until more than a century had elapsed. 1860203591860. Zweite umgearbeitete und vermehrte Auflage. - Stuttgart J.G. Cotta'scher Verlag 1860 VIII 204 pp. 14 getönten lithogr. Taf. "In 1940 Heine 1799-1879 gave the first description of acute anterior polyomelitus in a slender monograph of 78 pages. "Twenty years later 1860 in a much enlarged edition Heine gathered again his rich experiences announcing many new methods and observations. He called his new monograph "Spinale Kinderlähmung" as he assumed the seat of the disease to be in the spinal cord --- These tow monographs by Heine especially the second of 1860 . must be considered true classics . "Valentin After a brief account of the acute or primary stage comes a detailed description of the second or paralytic stage with numerous clinical histories of the different forms of paralysis followed by sections on etiology and pathologic anatomy differential diagnosis prognosis and treatment especially by orthopaedics means. The 29 lithographic figures illustrate deformities and apparatus. The book contains numerous references to the literature. Zit.a. Nachwort. 1784273121784. Vienna apud Rudolphum Graeffer 1784 8° 428 12 pp. gestochene Titelvignette Portrait marmorierter Kalbsledereinband der Zeit mit Buntpapiervorsätzen und reichlicher Rückenvergoldung; blasser St.a.Tit. Second Edition first 1783 of what Simon considers: "An unusually interesting book of dietetics and cookery describing the qualities of every possible kind of food and drink plants fungi animals fats and oils condiments wines and spirits tea coffee . etc." The text is in Latin but the German nomenclature is included. Plenck is probably best remembered for his system of dermatological calssification explained in his Doctrina de morbis cutaneis of 1776 but his talents were extensive as can be witnessed in this less well-known work. The portrait is of Giovanni Alessandro Brambilla to whom the work is dedicated. This work was obviously also found unusually interesting when it was published the second edition appearing just a year after the first and apparently being a direct reprint of the first with just the date changed - in effect a second issue rather than a true second edition. Chandler signature on title; General Theological Seminary perforated stamps. First British edition. 4 iv 23 1pp. 8vo. Revolutionary-era sermon dedicated to George Washington in which Duché urges the people of Philadelphia to stand fast despite the unnaturalness of being in conflict with their fellow British subjects. "We venerate the Parent Land from whence our progenitors came. But if we are to judge from the late ungenerous and ill-digested plans of policy which have been adopted by those whom she hath entrusted with the powers of Administration we cannot but think that they began to be jealous of our rising glory and from an ill-grounded apprehension of our aiming at independency were desirous of checking our growth."

Jacob Duché 1737-98 was born in Philadelphia and educated there before studying at Cambridge University. He returned to Philadelphia and eventually became rector of Christ Church. His early zeal for the revolutionary cause was such that he was appointed chaplain to the Continental Congress. After the Declaration of Independence and the capture of Philadelphia by General Howe Duché had a change of heart and wrote George Washington asking him to urge Congress to recall the Declaration and negotiate a peace. He was branded a traitor by his former followers and went into exile in Great Britain before returning to his beloved Philadelphia in 1792 to live out his final years.

This sermon first published in Philadelphia in 1775 the same year as this first British edition.
