Jacob Le Duchat 1658-1735 was a French literary scholar whose 1711 edition of the works of Rabelais was the first to include historical and critical commentary. "Le Duchat’s is the first of the critical editions. It takes account of differences in the texts and begins to point out the variations. His very numerous notes are remarkable and are still worthy of most serious consideration. He was the first to offer useful elucidations and these have been repeated after him and with good reason will continue to be so. Le Duchat’s commentary was translated into English by John Ozell for his 1737 edition of Gargantua and Pantagruel." In two parts separately titled and paginated Lof-Sang op het geestelyk houwelyk van godes soone Laudatory Song on the Spiritual Marriage of the Son of God. 44 544pp. 120pp. 5. Added engraved title page Proef steen van den trou-ringh in addition to the letterpress title to the first work two engraved full-page portraits one of prolific artist and poet Anna Maria van Schurman and one of Jacob Cats and a full-page allegorical engraving Het Derde Deel facing p. 249 in addition to 51 half-page engravings in the text depicting scenes of domestic and married life. Engraved printers device depicting Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Near contemporary vellum ms. title to spine somewhat effaced; some slight thumbsoiling lightly toned with age; corners bumped.

This 1671 edition based on the imprint of Trou-Ringh by Jacob Cats was first published in Dordrecht in 1637. Cats a Dutch Golden Age poet and politician wrote these rhymed dissertations on marriage and fidelity using very different marriage cases from literature in which conjugal ethics emerged. Cats method was to treat human behavior and society in all its aspects through the lens of marriage both human and spiritual ie. the marriage of Christ and His Church. He takes examples from the Bible Adam and Eve David and Abigail etc. and from classical and modern authors Cyrus and Aspasia Marc Anthony and Cleopatra etc. Cats tells of marriages to patriarchs ancient and modern; cases from Israel Persia Egypt from the life of Charles the Great and of the Great Mogul and Spanish gypsies. Also included are discussions of marriage after rape the breaking of marriage bonds adultery and the like. Because marriage dominated all periods and regions of the world all classes all ages with a variety of feelings and soul states this work resonated with the reader although Cats unusual storytelling intended moral and religious teachings. He propagated that marriage with its many possibilities and moral demands which it always must fulfill totally belong together: as do the ring and the stone. Cats was a distinguished Dutch writer but his Orangist and Calvinistic opinions set him apart from the liberal school of Amsterdam poets. Still for nearly two centuries he enjoyed enormous popularity. Wonderfully preserved important work on 17th century societal structures the many engravings are delightful and captivating. 194339198Sainte-Hélène Morbihan Brittany France 1943. A marvelous signed autograph letter from Max Jacob 1876-1944 to his close friend and protégé Maurice Morel "l'abbé Morel" 1908-1991. 2 pp front and back of a leaf measuring 27 x 21 cm about 400 words written neatly in ink. Jacob had encouraged Morel to paint in 1925 when the latter was only 17 and had organized his first exhibition. Morel became a successful painter. In 1934 Morel was ordained a Roman Catholic priest. The present letter begins with a meditation on communication and friendship as Jacob forgives Morel for not having written for some time: "Le silence est proportionnel à la sécurité en matière d'amitié. Mes meilleurs amis sont ceux qui m'écrivent le moins : c'est un fait. Les relations veulent être cultivées les amitiés s'assurent elles-mêmes sans certificat épistolaire. Je ne suis nullement surpris de trouver les plus silencieux de mes amis quand l'ai besoin d'eux ou qu'ils ont besoin de moi." The letter is dated August 18 and the envelope included is postmarked August 20 1943 several months before Jacob's arrest by the Gestapo and his death. A bit of toning but in very good condition. An outstanding item.

unknown
194139312Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire Loiret France 1941. A signed autograph letter written during the Occupation from Max Jacob 1876-1944 to his close friend and protégé Maurice Morel "l'abbé Morel" 1908-1991. 2 pp front and back of a leaf measuring 27 x 21 cm about 400 words written neatly in ink. Jacob had encouraged Morel to paint in 1925 when the latter was only 17 and had organized his first exhibition. Morel became a successful painter. In 1934 Morel was ordained a Roman Catholic priest. The present letter begins with a discussion of a manuscript Jacob is considering having published so that he can sell copies to tourists we can assume he's joking. The letter is dated February 28 1941 as is the postmark on the envelope included. In excellent condition. An outstanding item.

unknown
3325La Haye The Hague: Frederic Staatman 1765. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this very rare collection of letters to and from Rousseau and of works by and about Rousseau many of which were considered scandalous which explains why this collection was published in the Hague. 8 200 12 24 48 11 pp. Staatman the publisher thought up the idea of selling this book under two different titles. He printed two title-pages and two prefaces. There is also an "Avis aux libraires" advising booksellers that if someone asks for the "Recueil contre M. Rousseau" he the bookseller should excise the first title-page and preface. Otherwise he should excise the second title-page and preface. The original customer for the copy at hand apparently fell into the second category. 8vo.
