Mr. Warkentin's object in coming to Canada was to find a suitable place for the settlement of Mennonites who propose to emigrate en masse from Russia. And at the request of the Department of Agriculture he visited Manitoba in company with Mr. Shantz. At the request of the Canadian Department of Agriculture Shantz accompanied Bernard Warkentin to Manitoba in 1872-73 to assess conditions for settlement. His reports - including the present French edition - helped pave the way for the establishment of substantial Mennonite colonies in Manitoba profoundly shaping the cultural and agricultural landscape of Western Canada.
