Cats a Dutch Golden Age poet and politician wrote these rhymed dissertations on marriage and fidelity using very different marriage cases from literature in which conjugal ethics emerged. Cats method was to treat human behavior and society in all its aspects through the lens of marriage both human and spiritual ie. the marriage of Christ and His Church. He takes examples from the Bible Adam and Eve David and Abigail etc. and from classical and modern authors Cyrus and Aspasia Marc Anthony and Cleopatra etc. Cats tells of marriages to patriarchs ancient and modern; cases from Israel Persia Egypt from the life of Charles the Great and of the Great Mogul and Spanish gypsies. Also included are discussions of marriage after rape the breaking of marriage bonds adultery and the like. Because marriage dominated all periods and regions of the world all classes all ages with a variety of feelings and soul states this work resonated with the reader although Cats unusual storytelling intended moral and religious teachings. He propagated that marriage with its many possibilities and moral demands which it always must fulfill totally belong together: as do the ring and the stone. Cats was a distinguished Dutch writer but his Orangist and Calvinistic opinions set him apart from the liberal school of Amsterdam poets. Still for nearly two centuries he enjoyed enormous popularity. Wonderfully preserved important work on 17th century societal structures the many engravings are delightful and captivating. Leibniz' 2 papers on the catenary curve paper 1-2 offered here was written at the instigation of Jacques Bernoulli. Following the example of Blaise Pascal who had initiated in 1658 a contest for the construction of the cycloid Leibniz also provoked the geometers of his time by challenging them to submit at the fixed date of mid-1691 their geometric method for the construction of the catenary curve. Leibniz later provided the answer followed by Johann Bernoulli and Huygens.'These two papers are a historical account of the origin of the study of this transcendental curve and at the same time the first physical-geometric construction showing the species-relationship between the catenary and the logarithmic curves as two companion curves; one arithmetic the other geometric. All of the differentials of the catenary curve are arithmetic means of corresponding differentials of the logarithmic curve; and all of the differentials of the logarithmic curve are geometric means of the catenary.'"The Catenary is the form of a hanging fully flexible rope or chain the name comes from "catena" which means 'chain' suspended on two points. The interest in this curve originated with Galileo who thought that is was a parabola. Young Christiaan Huygens proved in 1646 that this cannot be the case. What the actual form was remained an open question till 1691 when Leibniz Johann Bernoulli and the then much older Huygens sent solutions to the problem to the "Acta" Jakob Bernoulli 1690 Johann Bernoulli 1691 Huygens 1691 and Leibniz 1691 - these 4 1691-papers offered here - in which the previous year Jakob Bernoulli had challenged mathematicians to solve it. As published the solutions did not reveal the methods but through later publications of manuscripts these methods have been known. Huygens applied with great paper 4 virtuosity the by then classical methods of 17th century infinitesimal mathematics and he needed all his ingenuity to reach a satisfactory solution. Leibniz the papers 1-2 and Bernoulli paper 3 applying the new Calculus found the solutions in a much direct way. In fact the catenary was a test-case between the old and the new style in the study of curves and only because the champion of the old style was a giant like Huygens the test-case can formally be considered as ending in a draw." Grattan-Guiness in "From the Calculus to Set Theory 1630-1910.".The paper by JACOB BERNOULLI no. 5 offered here is a milestone papers as it marks the invention of the "SYSTEM OF POLAR COORDINATES" with points located by reference to a fixed point and a line through that point. Although newton had earlier also devised such a coordinate system in 1671 his work was not known so that the credit for the discovery generally goes to Bernoulli. A substantial seventeenth-century antiquarian survey: medals bas-reliefs statues mosaics inscriptions and other remains of the ancient world treated in a long sequence of learned dissertations and enriched throughout with engraved material. One of the more attractive productions of early French antiquarian scholarship poised between cabinet culture and the beginnings of archaeology. By Monsieur Spon Jacob Spon Author Bio: Jacob Spon 16471685 was the Lyonnais physician scholar traveller and antiquary whose publications helped shape the early modern study of classical remains. Best known today for his travels in Italy Greece and the Levant Spon brought together the habits of the collector philologist and observer of monuments producing works that stand close to the emergence of archaeology as a more systematic discipline. His antiquarian books were widely consulted by later scholars especially for inscriptions medals and the interpretation of ancient objects preserved in cabinets and collections. Synopsis: This is the first edition of Spons important illustrated antiquarian work a wide-ranging gathering of dissertations on ancient material culture. The book moves across medals sculpture mosaic pavements inscriptions funerary monuments architectural ornaments ritual objects and related survivals of classical antiquity combining close visual attention with learned comparison from texts and collections. As with the best seventeenth-century antiquarian books it is both a record of objects and a demonstration of method: a cabinet of evidence arranged for the curious and the learned reader alike. The engraved title separate plate and typographic presentation give the volume considerable presence while the original binding preserves much of its early character. 167512522Nuremburg: J. von Sandart 1675. Copper engraving with early colour. Printed on laid paper. Title in manuscript ink on verso of sheet. Cleveland Historical Society collection stamp on verso of sheet. Numerous tears and creases in outside margins which have been expertly repaired. Center fold has been strengthened. An early map of Africa by the great mapmaker Jacob von Sandrart engraved by Homann.

Sandrart's stunning map of Africa is a close copy of Fredrik de Wit's map 'Nova Africa Descriptio' published in 1660. With the prime meridian running through Ferro Island the map is typical of late seventeenth century maps of Africa. Like other maps of the period Sandrart has included a highly decorative and informative cartouche in the lower left corner of the sheet. Homann's continental cartouches aspired to convey the natural history as well as the costume and manner of life of the human inhabitants. Here while a woman peacefully nurses her baby in a hammock a native chief stares out at the viewer from under the shade of a large umbrella. On the right side of the vignette two riders on horseback one with a cutlass and one with a decaptitated head ride by a river where one man is attacking another with his sword. Among the humans are a lion a snake a reptile of some sort and another fox-like animal. Although the map repeats De Wit's decorations it relies on Ptolemy for its description of the Nile basin. It is to some degree remarkable that seventeenth century maps of the interior of Africa were filled with geographical features and named locations since there had been very little European exploration of the interior at this date. European trade took place at specific locations along the coast and almost nothing was known about the interior of the dark continent except through rumor. This is a fascinating map by Sandrart and one of only two maps engraved by Homann before 1690. Born at Frankfurt-on-Main Jacob von Sandrart was one of the most esteemed mapmakers in Nuremberg at the close of the seventeenth century. He learned his trade from his uncle Joachim von Sandrart and from Cornelius Danckerts. As with this impressive map all of Sandrart's charts are filled with a wealth of decorative details and highly ornate cartouches. J. von Sandart unknown

167599PCHI08WBVRMiddelburg 1675. Small folio 28.5 x 18.5 cm. Willem Goeree Early sheepskin parchment over paperboards. With both title-pages printed in red and black about 150 woodcut diagrams in the text including a wide variety of sundials a woodcut headpiece with the Zeeland coat of arms plus 2 repeats and woodcut decorated initials. 2 works in 1 volume. 1 1 blank 2 108 3 1 blank; 1 1 blank 54 2 pp. Re-issues by Willem Goeree in Middelburg of the first editions of Jacob Mogge's extensively illustrated general introduction to the making and use of sundials and of his extensively illustrated translation of Lansberge's further account of various sorts of sundials on flat surfaces. Mogge's own work was first published by Zacharias Roman in Middelburg as Inleydinge der Sonne-Wijsers in 1666. Roman had published the first edition of Lansberge's posthumous Latin work on planar sundials Horologiographia plana in 1663 and Mogge translated it into Dutch and expanded it for publication together with his own work in matching format and style in 1666. Roman apparently died in or soon after 1667 however and Goeree must have acquired the remaining stock of these two books having cancel title-pages printed to re-issue them in 1675. They therefore still include the colophons of the 1666 editions at the end. Mogge opens his work with a general introduction to geometry and astronomy followed by a description of sundials on a flat surfaces and on the surface of the earth. Jacob Mogge ca. 1613-1669 was a surveyor and map draughtsman active in Zeeland from ca. 1649 to ca. 1666 describing himself as surveyor to the water district Vrije van Sluis. Lansberge 1561-1632 worked as physician and pastor in Middelburg Zeeland but devoted his last years to writing and publishing several important works on astronomy. With a faded manuscript inscription on the title-page in blue pencil. The binding is soiled and shows clear signs of wear the bottom half of the spine has been restored. A previous owner's inscription has been torn from the head of the title-page which has been restored but slightly affecting the "M" in the title. The book was first published in Dutch in 1665 by Johan's brother Hendrik and the Amsterdam based publisher and printer Jacob van Meurs. The publication was successful several edited editions followed geared towards commercial interests also translated into French German Latin and eventually into English. The English version was not published by Van Meurs but by John Ogilby instead. The book consists of the notes and illustrations that Nieuhof made in his position as a steward on Peter de Goyer and Jacob de Keizer's embassy to the emperor of China. The work itself is split into two parts. The first part contains the written account of the embassy led by Peter de Goyer and Jacob de Keizer to the emperor of China. It details the entire journey from "Guangzhou"Canton to Peking and back again. This part also contains descriptions and depictions of all that the embassy came to pass on its trip. The second part consists of an overview of China describing bridges mountains temples customs and costumes supported by illustrations. Prior to this period the image of the Chinese in Europe was dominated by fantasy illustrations. Many subsequent artists and architects based their work on Nieuhof's pictures.
