Es versucht, aus der Vergegenwärtigung seiner Arbeit Möglichkeiten der Selbstverständigung für die Philologie heute zu gewinnen. Dabei wird nicht der politische Gehalt oder irgendein Praxisbezug von Grimms Wissenschaft gesucht, sondern deren Logik rekonstruiert. Der Zusammenhang von Literaturgeschichte, Grammatik, Sprachgeschichte, Mythologie, Rechtsgeschichte und Lexikographie läßt die beiden Themen hervortreten, die die Philologie Jacob Grimms regieren: Vorgeschichte und Heimat. -- Wyss trägt zunächst die Schichten der Tradition des Grimm-Bildes der Germanistik ab; er zeigt dann, daß Grimms Neuansatz sich nicht mit dem Rückgriff auf die Wissenschaft seines Lehrers Savigny erklären läßt. In einem dritten Kapitel wird Grimms Sprachauffassung in den Zusammenhang der beginnenden historischen Linguistik gerückt und gezeigt, wie die spezifischen Fragestellungen Grimms sich herausbilden. Schließlich entwickeln das vierte und fünfte Kapitel die Themen Vorgeschichte - Geschichte und Heimat - Fremde und ihre spezifische Dialektik. -- Dabei zeigt es sich, daß Grimms Denken die in der Tradition des Historismus verfestigten Kategorien in Fluß bringt. Soweit ich hier im Lande sehen kann, sind alle redlichen Menschen . . . unserer Meinung zugetan.« Diese optimistischen Äußerungen Wilhelm Grimms aus dem Frühjahr 1838 nach seiner Entlassung in Göttingen sollten sich bald als trügerisch herausstellen. Ein Jahr später muß er erkennen, »daß man unseren kleinen Nachen, wo er landen wollte, zurückstieß«. Zwar gab es überall in Deutschland Sympathiebekundungen, aber die Regierenden konnten sich nirgends zu einer Einstellung der entlassenen Hochschullehrer entschließen. Besonders reserviert waren die Berliner Freunde der Brüder Grimm. Sie wußten, daß der preußische König seinen Schwager in Hannover nicht brüskieren wollte, und verhielten sich abwartend opportunistisch. Allein die romantische Schriftstellerin Bettine von Arnim kämpfte mit allen ihr zu Gebote stehenden Mitteln, um eine Rehabilitierung der Märchen-Herausgeber zu erreichen. Sie legte sich mit den bedeutendsten geistigen Köpfen in Berlin an und versuchte, Humboldt, Savigny, Ranke, Lachmann u. a. zu Stellungnahmen zu bewegen. Als sie erkannt hatte, daß selbst ihr Schwager, der einflußreiche Jurist Savigny, ihren phantasievoll geführten Kampf nicht unterstützte, wandte sie sich an den preußischen Kronprinzen. Er ließ sich sofort für die nationale Aufgabe gewinnen, und eine seiner ersten Amtshandlungen nach der Regierungsübernahme 1840 war die Berufung der Brüder Grimm nach Berlin (nach selbstgewählten Konditionen).
