Viviamo nella civiltà delle immagini, e i nostri sensi vengono quotidianamente sottoposti a un bombardamento di figure la cui potenza di fuoco non ha mai avuto pari nella storia del genere umano. I tradizionali modelli interpretativi, incentrati sulla parola e sul discorso, sono insufficienti a renderne conto in modo adeguato. Oggi le ricerche che si raccolgono sotto il titolo di "cultura visuale" sono chiamate a rispondere a questa sfida: non per affermare un ingenuo primato dell'immagine sulla parola, ma per indagare parola e immagine nella loro azione reciproca, e nei loro condizionamenti storici. Jacob Burckhardt ha precocemente intuito questa costellazione di problemi: storico della cultura e storico dell'arte, ha insegnato a generazioni di europei che il vedere non si dà nella sua immediata naturalità, ma si forma nella storicità della percezione. Attorno a questi nodi problematici, insieme storici e teorici, ruotano i saggi presentati in questo volume: impegnati a illuminare ora il Burckhardt storico della cultura, ora il Burckhardt storico dell'arte, ora la sfera delle immagini visive ora la dimensione della parola e del linguaggio.
