An important volume of colonial American laws the third and scarcest official compilation fundamental laws constitutions and documents for New Jersey covering from 1663-64 to 1702 with the session laws from 1668 to 1701. "Prior to the middle of the 18th century all of New Jersey's fundamental documents remained in manuscript form only" -- Felcone. "This handsome volume generally known as Leaming and Spicer's Laws was prepared under the authority of an act of Assembly passed in 1752 and is the largest work issued from the press of Wm. Bradford."--The Charlemagne Tower Collection. Subscribers were solicited beginning in February 1755; the compilers chiefly by Samuel Nevill and Samuel Smith spent almost two years preparing the text. The printing under the supervision of Leaming and Spicer took three more years until it was ready for delivery in May 1758. The subscribers had taken 170 copies and the editors say in the Pennsylvania Journal 11 May 1758 "a number of copies yet remain not subscribed for" and "any person may be supplied" until "the 17th of July next after which we will not further extend the sale." Early English grammar for Portuguese speakers Scarce first edition in Portuguese of this pocket English grammar book for Portuguese students in a contemporary Portuguese binding. Jacob de Castro Sarmento 1690-1762 was a Portuguese converso who after a degree in medicine moved to London in 1721 where he spent several decades. He first published his grammar in London in 1731 - "the earliest English grammar published expressly for the use of Portuguese learners" Marinho p. 139 - at a time when the Portuguese were becoming increasingly interested in learning English for business and commerce. The edition in English was reprinted several times in London. The work begins with sections on pronunciation capitalization punctuation and prosody then continues with grammar and syntax employing the terminology typically used for inflected languages. The final part comprises simple bilingual dialogues and a glossary of verbs grouped by semantic field. An appended section provides bilingual templates on "letters on business or mercantile affairs" such as bills of exchange or receipts. An ownership inscription on the initial blank reads: "Rob. Wm. Patrick / November 14th / 1805 / St Salvador" plausibly Col. Robert William Patrick c.17831809 born in Dublin Ireland. Patrick served in the Anglo-Portuguese Army during the Peninsular War and died at about age 26 defending the bridge at Amarante Porto. St Salvador was the contemporary English name for what is now Salvador Bahia Brazil. Provenance: Stephen C. Massey. Small octavo 140 x 100 mm pp. 8 269 1. Woodcut vignette to title woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces. Contemporary mottled sheep flat spine compartments gilt-ruled edges sprinkled red. Nineteenth-century ink stamp EE to title. Leather. x 235 pp iv Register in Gothic typeface 320 pp. Slapeloose nachten is "het twee-en-tachtig-jarig leven van den selven Heere an zyn geboorte tot zyndoodtoe; door hem zelf in vaerzen beschreven. Den Achsten Druk. Met vernieuwde Figuuren". Red and black title page frontis is missing and page iii is torn vertically and lacking 1/3 of the page Wonderful engravings and lots of them many showing the devils that beset the man attempting unsuccesfully to sleep. The first volume ends on Twee-en Tachtig Jarig Levn "eynde" then the Register van Boeken by J. en H. van der Deyster Gedrukt in Gothic type then an engraved frontis plate for the Spiegel. the title page "den lesten Druk van nieuws oversien en gecorrigeert en van veel Druksauten verbetert with the publishing information of van der utte Amsterdam but no date. Also wonderfully illustrated with engravings printed in both Gothic type and standard type. There are no final blanks for the Spiegel but it is complete. Leather boards are a bit crackled rubbed at the corners and edges. Spine has 5 raised bands with gilt decorations and a #4 in gilt spine tips are quite worn front hinge cracking and front board threatening to detach but still holding. Half title for Slapeloose Nachten has an old ownership inscription and there is a very old pressed violet at page 81 that has caused some browning otherwise clean and unmarked. Paper is sturdy with only moderate foxing and aging. Quite scarce. ; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall . Jan Van Der Deyster & Abraham van Der Putte hardcover
