1792126
Six illustrations on three pages depicting slavery from the famous Jacob Schmuzer 18th century copper engraving master. Framed attractively and professionally the pages are each 4 x 6 inches in fine condition clear hand colored and signed by Schmuzer in this 10.5 x 18 inch display. These are from Gottlieb Wilhelm's massive highly illustrated series on natural history which he began to publish in the late 1700s.

These half-dozen illustrations mainly show the evils of slavery including an African male wearing a jaw-and-tongue iron a white male wearing a 24-pound collar an Indian Brahmin suspended over a fire an African female chained to a 100-pound weight a trio of male slaves gutting a huge snake in South America a diagram of a ship's hold full of African slaves and a female slave in chains working on a coffee plantation with her small children while another slave is whipped behind her.

Schmuzer 1713-1775 was from a family well-known for its fine illustrations and printing. Wilhelm 1758-1811 was a popular Bavarian clergyman and naturalist known as the "German Buffon."

This ready-to-hang display reminds us that while humanity is capable of great intellect and aspiration it also possesses base instincts serving its own interests above all. Such realistic artwork is scarce valuable and essential to avoiding repetition of the past.
Gottlieb Wilhelm
