The complete medical works of Lazare Rivière 1589-1655 professor at Montpellier consists of the Institutiones medicae together with the Praxeos medicae and an additional 17 parts on the head the sense organs the teeth the thorax and abdomen the joints womens illnesses and fevers. Also included are 400 observations by the author approximately 250 communicated to him by fellow physicians and finally the Arcana a collection of secrets giving the chemical formulae for a large number of preparations together with their medicinal properties. At the end separately paginated is added a treatise on the symptoms cause and cure of respiratory problems by Fabrizio Bartoletti 1586-1630. Rivière was the first to introduce the therapy of using metallic compounds internally known as the spagiric or paracelsian-specific method and the first to note aortic constriction. Inscribed and signed by W. C. Handy on the front cover to Miss Sybil Gregory dated June 16 1951 the year of publication. Near Fine. An uncommon Handy Brothers Music Co. publication issued late in the career of W. C. Handy 1873–1958. The song is credited to Lazarus A. Aaronson a little-documented composer whose work here was published in homage to Handy. The present copy bears Handy’s contemporary inscription: “To Miss Sybil Gregory — W. C. Handy — 6-16-1951.â€<br /> <br /> Little information survives regarding Gregory suggesting a personal acquaintance or admirer within Handy’s musical circle. Signed publications from the Handy Brothers imprint are uncommon and provide a tangible association with one of the most influential figures in the history of American blues. 1880y0672Venice: Armenian Monastery of S. Lazarus 1880. Fifth or so edition of this small but important booklet introducing Ottoman Armenian folklore to the English world. Includes two pages showing the Armenian alphabet proverbs in Armenian text with English translation below. The Monastery of Saint Lazarus was an important center of Armenian culture & scholarship in the nineteenth century and remains active today. First published in 1844 with 180 proverbs and reprinted in 1861 and 1868 this 1880 edition has 192 proverbs - though many of those newly added do seem to correspond remarkably with vernacular English proverbs. There was also a printing in 1873. Delicate paperback showing some wear mended tears to cover & first leaf adhesive residue on front cover light creasing staple rust pages tanned minor loss to lower corner of first leaf perforated letters to first leaf no other markings noted. 37 pages. . A collection of 107 fables drawn from Greek Jewish Hindu and Arab narratives exploring moral values and the meaning of wisdom. Illustrated with expressive black & white woodcuts the anthology is written in agile rhymed prose and includes some original stories by the author who is also known as Berachya. A nakdan translator grammarian poet ethicist and philosopher working at the beginning of the thirteenth century he references the Talmud adds biblical allusions and gives a Jewish spirit to his interpretations of these Fox Fables. Text in Hebrew; table of contents and Goldschmidt's introduction in German. "Nach der ersten Ausgabe herausgegeben und eingeleitet von Lazarus Goldschmidt." A significant work that greatly expands this distinctive literary genre in the Hebrew language. Staining on binding front board slightly bowed.
