Thin dust-soiling to fore-edge else a nice copy otherwise; very good. Though a stated "tenth edition" this may be a slight exaggeration. The earliest edition in OCLC is the fourth and there are only records of a few in between. A wonderful compendium of the moneyed elite in mid-19th century New York a time when successful immigrants and their children were beginning to nip at the heels of the Mayflower descendants and their like. Order of Slikhot prayers for forgiveness to be included in the Jewish observance during the month of Elul the month of the High Holidays between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. The book captures the custom of polish Jews Ashkenazi tradition which differs from Sephardi tradition in many ways. While Sephardi Jews include Slikhot throughout the month of Elul Ashkenazi Jews observe Slikhot for the ten days of Rosh Hashana to Yom Kippur. Text in Hebrew. Binding reinforced with brown library tape at spine staining and splintered corners at edges of front cover. Spine frayed at head and tail. Foxing inside front cover. Title page and first leaf detached but present creasing at inner margin affects decoration up to 0.5 inches staining from wax creasing and fraying at lower edge affects text up to 1 inch missing. Sporadic wax stains foxing age-toning and some water stains throughout block. Starting at leaf 49. Last two pages detached but present. Foxing inside back cover which is splintered in the middle of lower half. Back cover separated from block but attached at front joint. Binding in overall poor interior in fair to good- condition. Original old cloth laid over front spine and back is moderately worn so the book retains its original appearance but now has a strong tight binding with new end papers. Attractive gilt and black cover design. Owner's name label inside. Internal content is generally quite clean and free of marks but has a few small minor and widely scattered smudges. Old tape repair on page 105/106 of the index.The volume opens with a short historical and descriptive sketch of Philadelphia then is divided into two parts. The first part is about notable Philadelphians which runs from page 15 to 112. This contains 1560 portraits of living and deceased Philadelphians of note. The second part King's Views begins with new page numbering from 1 to 102 with photography of important buildings businesses churches and historic structures then finishes with a long photo sequence of prestigious homes in and around Philadelphia.
