Traces of light soiling to the front board of volume 1. Text in French and Hebrew. Photomechanical reprint of the 1856-1866 edition. Moses ben Maimoun 1138-1204 more commonly known as Maimonides in the English language and as Rambam in Hebrew is viewed as the greatest Jewish philosopher of the Middle Ages. This work The Guide of the Perplexed is his magnum opus. It is an in-depth treatment of Jewish thought and practice that aims to resolve the conflict between religious knowledge and secular. Although strongly influenced by the Neo-Platonized Aristotelianism that had sprouted in Islamic circles it departs from the dominant modes of Aristotelian thought by emphasizing the limits of human knowledge and the questionable foundations of significant parts of astronomy and metaphysics. Maimonides was also a well-known physician who wrote medical treatises on numerous diseases and their cures. Later generations of philosophers wrote detailed commentaries on the works of Maimonides which heavily influenced thinkers such as Aquinas Spinoza Leibnitz and Newton. Information from the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Otto Zeller hardcover
