First published at Venice in 1544 it is notable that a Latin translation appears so soon after a sixteenth-century editio princeps of a Hebrew work. It comprises a commentary on and explanation of difficult terms in Maimonides' Moreh Nevukhim Guide for the Perplexed with an elucidation of terminology in the translations of Arabic to Hebrew as well as the jargon of medieval philosophical literature in general. As the editor of the present edition notes at the title "Ru'ah Hen has been attributed to the renowned translator R. Judah ben Saul ibn Tibbon c. 1120-c. 1190 and to R. Jacob ben Abba Mari ben Samson Anatoli 13th century also a translator of note. Ibn Tibbon known as the 'father of translators' was born in Granada Spain but relocated to Lunel in Provence France to escape the persecution of the Jews in the former location. He supported himself as a physician coming into contact with many sages one of whom R. Meshullam ben Jacob requested that ibn tibbon translate R. Bahya ibn Paquda's Hovot ha-Levavot into Hebrew. In addition to translating that work from Arabic ibn Tibbon also translated several other books into Hebrew among them R. Judah Halevi's Kuzari R. Saadiah Gaon's Emunot ve-De'ot and R. Solomon ibn Gabirol's Middot ha-Nefesh and Mivhar Peninim" Heller. While this is the fourth known printing of the work it is the first to include vowel points and the translation of the formerly Jewish convert to Christianity Johann Isaac Levita 1515-1577 a descendant of Elias Levita the most famous in his time of those Jews who sought scholarly contact with Christians and taught Christians Hebrew. As an added bonus the present edition includes Maimonides' De astrologia epistola elegans. The celebrated English jurist and Hebrew scholar John Selden is known to have had a copy of Ruah ha-Hen in his library Oxford Library note.

Adams J-403. Cf. 199384862Brunswick OH: The Association of Engineering Geologists 1993. Reprin. Staplebound on left side. Very good/No DJ present. 4 37-78 pages. Illustrations. Tables. Maps. References. This was originally published in the Bulletin of The Association of Engineering Geologists Vol. XXX No. 1 1993. This was the eighteenth Cities of The World paper and examined the geologic setting of a rapidly-growing arid-land city lying in a deep largely inward-draining alluvial basin surrounded by relatively rugged mountains. Las Vegas is a geotechnical and hydrologic realm influenced primarily by water. Its very name in Spanish mends "the meadows". The general scarcity of water today the constant potential for flash-flooding and the troublesome characteristics of foundations soils in the area are serious concerns that must be addressed. Las Vegas has faced the problems of solid waste disposal water treatment rational water use flooding and earthquakes---all of which are related to the unique geologic and geomorphic setting. Among the topics covered include Geological setting Seismicity Foundation Design Construction Material Environmental Water Supply Aquifers Solid Waste Management Wetlands Flooding and Sediment Transport. In June 1957 13 local engineering geologists met in Sacramento CA to discuss the need for organization of a society in the specific field of engineering geology. During the next eight months this group set up the framework of the California Association of Engineering Geologists by formulating the aims of the organization a definition of Engineering Geology and membership qualifications. In February 1958 although the Constitution and Bylaws were yet to be completed membership recruitment was begun. Three Sections Los Angeles Sacramento and San Francisco were established. The Association was incorporated according to the laws of the State of California on May 7 1963. By this action the original Executive Committee of twelve became the Board of Directors and requisite constitutional changes were made accordingly. During the early years following the formation of the Association it became increasingly apparent that a need for a similar organization existed with engineering geologists everywhere not just in California. Evident from the first were the geologists outside the State of California who were concerned with the application of geology to problems of civil engineering who showed a marked interest in the organization. In recognition of this need and interest the membership voted better than 10 to 1 in late 1962 to remove all geographical limitations on the organization and to change the name to Association of Engineering Geologists. Constitutional changes to effect this organization were subsequently completed in early 1963. In 1963 the first Section outside of California Washington State was established. Seventeen Sections including two outside the United States were recognized by 1973. On the occasion of the Association's twenty-fifth year twenty-two Sections formed the regional units of the Association. In 1964 AEG was accepted as a member society of the American Geological Institute. On September 22 2005 the name change to the Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists became official. The Association has been serving members of both the environmental and engineering geology for a number of years and the name change serves to provide formal recognition of this support. 1810413795Haverhill Massachusetts 1810. Softcover. Near Fine. Partially printed letterpress documents. 154 documents p. 5 28-177 all but the first five documents are hand-numbered by Wingate. Each document is filled out in the hand of Moses Wingate in his capacity as Justice of the Peace of Haverhill. Formerly bound with sewing and glue marks along the spine otherwise the documents themselves are mostly near fine or better with a few of them exhibiting small chips or tears. Each document contains the names of the adversaries and usually the decision by default which is filled out and Signed by Moses Wingate. A few have extensive notes on the verso but most are straightforward defaults. We suspect most of the plaintiffs were businessmen or shopkeepers and most of the defendants were defaulters on small accounts.

Wingate born in 1769 was a distinguished resident of Haverhill in Essex County near the New Hampshire border who lived to more than 100 dying in 1870 and who cast a vote in every presidential election from Washington to Grant. He was at various times a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives and Senate and Justice of the Peace of Haverhill for nearly half a century.

Among the plaintiffs here represented is publisher and printer Daniel Appleton founder of the important publisher D. Appleton and Company; as well as members of the locally prominent Carlton Minot Emerson Ingersoll and Whittier families John Greenleaf Whittier was born in Haverhill in 1807; at least three different Whittiers are named here presumably relatives.

An interesting historical insight into business and justice in the early days of the Republic. unknown
