Half dark orange cloth and marbled boards probably early 20th century very good pages tanning. 270 99 1 pp. the second part with questions and answers. Book of Jewish legal deeds and contracts and law first publishedin Amsterdam in 1667. According to the Jewish Encyclopedia "in 1660 he was rabbi of Bamberg with his residence at Zeckendorf. His stay here was of short duration for he made many enemies through his violent temper and the self-assertion which he displayed in his new office; and it was in vain that his relative and subsequent successor warned him that he would endanger his position if he did not heed the views of the German scholars." Sometime around 1665 he resigned the rabbinate and had the time to compose this book. "Samuel's chief work to which he owes his general popularity appeared in Amsterdam 1667-68 under the title "Na alat Shib'ah" being a collection of formulas for all documents and records interspersed with thorough discussions of questions of civil and matrimonial laws in connection therewith. A second edition of this work with much supplementary matter appeared Frankfort-on-the-Main 1681 shortly before his death under the title "Mahadura Batra le-Sefer Na alat Shib'ah." Translated from Judeo-Arabic into Hebrew by Rabbi Isaac ben Nathan. This is the first edition with a German commentary: Renowned Orientalist and bibliographer Moritz Steinschneider see below added a summary a linguistic analysis and a thematic analysis in his preface. Age wear to binding with minor browning and foxing throughout. Overall clean and tight. In Hebrew with German preface. Good condition. R. Moses Maimonides Rambam was a 12th century Jewish philosopher and halachic legal scholar. A highly controversial figure both during his lifetime and after his death but generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba Spain but fled as a child from the Almohad persecution. He eventually settled in Egypt where he served as a rabbi physician and philosopher. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah his only work not in Arabic still carries canonical authority particularly within the Yemenite Jewish community as the codification of Talmudic law. His other work includes a commentary on the Mishnah entitled Kitab al-Siraj Kitab al-Fara'I a book on precepts and the philosophical work Dalalat al-Ha'irin known in Hebrew as the Moreh Nevukhim The Guide to the Perplexed. The major premise is an attempted philosophical/theological reconciliation of the Hebrew Bible and Greek knowledge. This work came to play a central role in all subsequent major controversies over philosophy within the Jewish community during the Middle Ages. On the editor: Moritz Steinschneider 1816 – 1907 was a Bohemian Orientalist and bibliographer. He received his early instruction in Hebrew from Jacob Steinschneider 1782 - 1856 his father who was not well versed in both Talmud and secular science. After the trial Thacher left New England and served as pastor in Wysox Pennsylvania and in Courtland and Cayuga Counties in New York. The trials attracted a fair amount of attention; according to Cohen it was discussed in three pamphlets. All are scarce. "Guest a revolutionary soldier came to Cincinnati in 1817 and gives some account of his residence there. His voyages were to the Georgia and the Carolina coasts" - Howes. During the Revolution Guest had served in the militia unit which captured the noted partisan Col. Lincoln as well as John Graves Simcoe in New Jersey in October 1779. Many of the poems relate to the Revolution e.g. Gen. Washington Col. Simcoe's expedition etc. The journal which records three distinct travels begins on page eighty-three and describes trips to Cuba and the Bahamas in the 1780s a trek from New Brunswick to Canada in 1796 and a trip from New Brunswick to Cincinnati in 1817. Felcone states that only some copies of the second edition include a plate. The copy at hand does not have such a plate and there is no evidence that one has been removed. HOWES G456. THOMSON 471.
