1887002833Boston: Houghton Mifflin 1887. Incredibly rare First Edition 12mo size hardcover; 398 toned pages. This book has been professionally rebound probably in the 1930s in blue cloth or buckram with yellow titles and gray endpapers. Ex-library with typical treatments to accession and deaccession. Sunned bumped and worn spine has blue cloth Dewey label. Corners are lightly bumped and lightly worn. The pages are fragile and brittle. The top corners of pages 55-62 and 245 are chipped with some loss of text. Pages 67 89 91 95-100 205 and 287-290 are chipped at top corner pages 235 and 332 are chipped on page edge; the top corner of pages 114 and 175 are detached and laid in and the corner of page 175 has a small stain. Pages 15 81 103-106 115 129-143 153/158 177 181 189-191 201 and 331 have tears of varying sizes. Seven pages are mended with tape which has darkened and in some cases stained the abutting page. One of the signatures groups of bound pages for pages 245-284 has a broken top stitch. We also noted several tiny check or ticks marks in the text. Blue unlettered cloth with gilt central motifs to each cover joints and bottom spine rubbed and some slight cloth fraying and trace of corner rubbing small spot of cloth loss lower back and 3 or so small dark spots to front hardly visible against dark blue cloth. 36 pp. gilt edges outer sides of end-papers and pastedown have a slightly glossy moire-patterned surface though inner sides of end-papers as rest of text; no obvious internal faults being clean bright and unmarked. Am a little puzzled by binding as it seems original gilt edging to end-papers and these contiguous with paste-downs but feels later than pub. date perhaps a later private high-end rebinding with gilt added. Small quarto 10.25 x 9 inches original leather boards with mid-20th century amateur blue cloth spine recent endpapers looks like wallpaper contents very good. 144 93 pp. Boards a bit rubbed and used at edges. Aaronsohn 1805-76 was a preacher rabbi and scholar. Born in Salant Lithuania Aaronsohn was a preacher maggid in Eastern Europe Vishtinetz Brotski and Mir and was recognized for his scholarship by 1836 when he published Pardes ha- okhmah a book of sermons. He later published Pardes ha-Binah a book of sermons with responsa. Aaronsohn arrived in the United States c. 1860 living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan where he held services in his home and was known as "The East Broadway Maggid." For four years he served as a preacher in a number of established synagogues including Chevrat Vizhaner and the Allen Street Beth Hamedrash which had split from the Beis Medrash Hagadol. In 1864 he became the rabbi at Congregation Adath Yeshurun in New York City. He continued to write responsa and also included the opinions of those rabbis in Eastern Europe with whom he corresponded regarding contemporary halakhic issues. Uncommon in the trade. hardcover
1854List1708Philadelphia 1854. Ninth plate ambrotypes in a union case measuring 2 ½ x 2 ⅛ inches visible in larger case. With the identification of Isaac Rehn with his imprint and “Patented July 4 & 11 1854†imprinted on the case. A fine pair. A striking pair of ambrotypes of Mary and Moses Pennock who were members of the Kennett Square Underground Railroad network as well as active members of the Kennett Square abolitionist and Quaker community. Moses was one of the founders of the Longwood Progressive Meeting. In R.C. Smedley’s History of the Underground Railroad in Chester and Neighboring Counties of Pennsylvania Lancaster Office of the Journal 1883 the Pennocks are mentioned on p. 301 as working as part of the network surrounding Isaac and Thamazine Meredity. Their son Samuel who would go on to secure important agricultural patents is also mentioned twice. <br /> <br /> The images are notable from a photographic history perspective as well as being early examples of the ambrotype process that had been patented in part by fellow Quaker and spiritualist Isaac Rehn. Rehn held a partial patent on ambrotypes along with James Ambrose Cutting of Boston and became unpopular among other photographers for his efforts to extend his patent. He later practiced spiritual photography and was a Professor of Chemistry at Pennsylvania Medical University in Philadelphia. Rehn was also involved in radical politics as a founder and leader of the Philadelphia section of the International Workingmen’s Association which was later disenfranchised by Karl Marx along with several other American sections. Examples of Rehn’s work are held at the National Gallery of Art the Library Company of Philadelphia and Yale’s Sterling Memorial Library. <br /> <br /> Overall a very fine and significant pair of images. unknown
