At the time of the Civil War the Moses family were fifth- generation Sephardic Jews. They were "completely acculturated into Columbus society while remaining devout Jews" Rosen. During the war Isaac Moses manufactured rifles for the Confederacy at Columbus. The American Civil War database lists an Isaac Moses serving in Nelson's Georgia cavalry but provides no further information. Not in Hummel or Singerman. In 1762 he became secretary of a second Society of Aurelians. He was a skilled artist displaying some of his insect drawings at the Royal Academy in 1785. 1824863M10Merthyr Tydfil: J. James 1824. First edition. Hardback. Very Good. 7.5" by 4.5". Not Stated. The first edition of this very scarce collection of poetry by the Welsh poet William Moses. The first edition of this very scarce work rebound in boards with a paper spine label. Ink inscriptions to the first blank page. William Moses 1742-1824 received only seven months worth of education before being impelled to work but he endeavoured to educate himself so that he could write poetry in the native language that he loved. He published his first volume of poems in 1808. This work a second collection was published just before his death in 1824 and is now a very scarce work. The title page and last two pages are facsimiles of the originals but the rest of the work is the original 1824 printing. Rebound in boards with a paper spine label. Externally in excellent condition. Internally firmly bound. The facsimile pages appear a little faint but are otherwise bright and clean. The rest of the pages are age toned and spotted throughout. Moses Allen Starr's "Brain surgery" was the first American book on neurosurgery published the same year as Macewen's pioneering neurosurgical classic. Moses Allen Starr 1854-1932 'Professor of Neurology in the College pf Physician and Surgeons at Columbia University New York City' "had plans for a career in classical culture when he graduated from Princeton and embarked for Germany to study Greek and Roman history. In Berlin however several visits to Helmholtz's laboratory revived a latent interest in natural science. He returned to his native New York graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons P&S Columbia University did a residency at Bellevue Hospital then returned to Europe to work at Heidelberg Vienna and Paris. On return to New York he set up a laboratory in his home and in 1884 published an essay on the sensory tracts of the central nervous system elucidating some of the then-current questions of myelination. Starr's regard as an American pioneer in the field of cerebral localization stemmed from his participation in a symposium on that subject with the famous English neurologist David Ferrier and neurosurgeon Victor Horsley who were delegates to the 1888 Congress of American Physicians and Surgeons in Washington D.C. He became professor of nervous diseases at the Montreal Neurological Institute. During neurosurgical operations they electrically stimulated the surface of the exposed unanesthetized brains of patients who were talking. On-going speech was blocked by excitation of the parietal-temporal area the inferior frontal area and the supplemental motor area of the left hemisphere Penfield & Roberts 1959. "Die andere bedeutende jüdische Medizinerfamilie in Frankenberg war die Familie Lissard. Deren erster Vertreter Moses Lissard stammte aus Amöneburg wo er am 29. Juni 1835 als Sohn eines in sehr dürftigen Verhältnissen lebenden jüdischen Lehrers geboren wurde.15 Nach dem Besuch der Gymnasien in Fulda und Marburg begann er an der Philippina das Studium der Medizin. Ein Antrag vor der geforderten Studienzeit von vier Jahren zum Fakultätsexamen zugelassen zu werden wurde im April 1860 vom Kurfürsten abgelehnt trotz Befürwortung durch die Fakultät.16 Anschließend studierte er noch eine Zeit lang an der Universität Würzburg. Das Thema seiner Marburger Dissertation aus dem Jahr 1861 lautete: Tracheotomie beim Croup. 1862 legte er in Kassel das Staatsexamen ab. Während seiner Studienzeit in Marburg kam Lissard in engere Beziehung zu Wilhelm Roser einem der berühmtesten Chirurgen seiner Zeit und wurde einer seiner Lieblingsschüler. Als er ein nach seinen Angaben konstruiertes Instrument das als 'Lissard-Rosersche Nachbehandlungskanüle' bekannt wurde in einer Schrift empfahl schrieb Roser dazu die Vorrede. Erst im Frühjahr 1865 erhielt Lissard auf die dringende Bitte des Stadtrats beim kurfürstlichen Medizinalkollegium um Wiederbesetzung der damals vakanten Stelle die Praxiserlaubnis in Frankenberg. ." The document reads in part: "Alexander Hart in account current with Moses Hart. " The figures list balances payments compensations charges including for "1/3 burial wall" and totals. Moses Hart's autograph appears next to the total. The docket is in the hand of Alexander Hart.
