WIKIPEDIA<br/>Moses B. Stuart an American biblical scholar was born in Wilton Connecticut. He graduated with highest honours at Yale in 1799; in 1802 he was admitted to the Connecticut bar and was appointed as a tutor at Yale where he remained for two years. In 1806 Stuart became the pastor of the Centre Congregational Church of New Haven being appointed professor of sacred literature in the Andover Theological Seminary in 1809.Here he succeeded Eliphalet Pearson 1752-1826 the first preceptor of the Phillips Andover Academy and in 1786-1806 professor of Hebrew and Oriental languages at Harvard. At this time he knew hardly more than elementary Hebrew and not much more Greek; in 1801-12 he prepared for the use of his students a Hebrew grammar which they copied day by day from his manuscript; in 1813 he printed his Grammar which appeared in an enlarged form with a copious syntax and praxis in 1821 and was republished in England by Dr Pusey in 1831. He gradually made the acquaintance of German works in hermeneutics first Johann Friedrich Schleusner Seiler and Gesenius and taught himself German arousing much suspicion and distrust among his colleagues by his unusual studies. However recognition soon followed partly as a result of his Letter to Dr Channing on the Subject of Religious Liberty 1830 but more largely through the growing favour shown to German philology and critical method. In 1848 he resigned his chair at Andover. Stuart died in Andover on January 4th 1852.Stuart has been called the father of exegetical studies in America. He contributed largely by his teaching to the renewal of foreign missionary zeal-of his 1500 students more than 100 became foreign missionaries among them such skilled translators as Adoniram Judson Elias Riggs and William G Schauffler. Stuart's 1850 book "Conscience and the Constitution" took the position that slavery is an institution allowed by the Bible but that as it was actually practiced in the United States slavery was morally wrong. One of the first books published at Andover Theological Seminary and for more than thirty years the standard among theological institutions. Paradise A history of printing in Andover. Prior to his joining Andover as professor of sacred literature Stuart had no acquaintance with Hebrew. He immediately began intensive study of the language and became one of the few native-born Americans to know enough to teach it. Lack of funding compelled Stuart to produce his own grammar for the benefit of his students which was first circulated in manuscript then printed in 1813 and expanded in 1821. He had to import Hebrew type and as local printers couldn't properly set it did much of the setting himself DAB. While other grammars of Hebrew had been printed in America as accompaniments to lexicographical works this is one of the earliest if not the first separately produced grammar of Hebrew in the States. 1813022710Andover: Flagg & Gould. One of the earliest American publications using a Hebrew font. Original boards. First Edition. Flagg and Gould the press of Andover Theological Seminary acquired fonts in Greek and Hebrew type and because nobody else knew how to set them Stuart did it himself. Scott Paradise noted in his History of Printing in Andover that this book was the first publication using a Hebrew font to be published in America but actually several other such publications preceded it. With his work in Hebrew grammar and criticism Stuart was called the leader of Hebrew scholarship in America Americas most competent philologist and grammarian the undisputed leader in American exegetical science and one of the 19th-centurys most notable American scholars. Stuart noted that he printed only 120 copies of this book so it is extremely rare. Stuarts biographer John H. Giltner wrote that this book was the first American attempt to publish anything like a comprehensive exposition of the character and usage of the Hebrew language and a landmark in the history of American Hebrew studies. . A graduate of Yale University Moses Stuart 1780-1852 clergyman and Biblical scholar was called to the professorship of sacred literature at Andover Theological Seminary Andover Massachusetts where he was inaugurated 28 February 1810. "At that time there was probably no native-born American who knew enough Hebrew to teach it properly. He began at once to study Hebrew seriously and wrote a short Hebrew grammar which he circulated among his students in manuscript. In 1821 he imported a font of Hebrew type and printed a larger Hebrew grammar the first to appear in America. Since no compositor was able to handle it he had to set most of the type himself." - DAB. He passionately recommended operating on patients with spinal tumors as the alternative - conservative treatment - was associatedwith a very high mortality: 74%of patients with unoperated extradural tumors and 83% of patients with unoperated intradural tumors died due to respiratory failure pneumonia urinary septicemia or decubitus ulcera to mention the commonest causes of death. Horsley was convinced that surgery could prevent grave complications and death for a significant number of patients even given the prevailing enormous diagnostic and technical restraints. His paper was so stimulating that Starr could report on 19 spinal tumor operations as early as 1895 adding three cases of his own. Eleven of these however died from postoperative complications.With increasing experience however mortality figures could be reduced." In Berlin however several visits to Helmholtz's laboratory revived a latent interest in natural science. He returned to his native New York graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons P&S Columbia University did a residency at Bellevue Hospital then returned to Europe to work at Heidelberg Vienna and Paris. On return to New York he set up a laboratory in his home and in 1884 published an essay on the sensory tracts of the central nervous system elucidating some of the then-current questions of myelination. Starr's regard as an American pioneer in the field of cerebral localization stemmed from his participation in a symposium on that subject with the famous English neurologist David Ferrier and neurosurgeon Victor Horsley who were delegates to the 1888 Congress of American Physicians and Surgeons in Washington D.C. He became professor of nervous diseases at the Montreal Neurological Institute. During neurosurgical operations they electrically stimulated the surface of the exposed unanesthetized brains of patients who were talking. On-going speech was blocked by excitation of the parietal-temporal area the inferior frontal area and the supplemental motor area of the left hemisphere Penfield & Roberts 1959.
