The Domesday Book is the record of the great survey of England completed in 1086 executed for William I of England otherwise known as 'William the Conqueror'. It was written in Latin although there were some vernacular words inserted for native terms with no previous Latin equivalent and the text was highly abbreviated. Abraham Farley d.1791 was a lifelong civil servant who was appointed deputy chamberlain of the Exchequer in 1736 and soon became involved with the public records at the Chapter House of Westminster Abbey. First amongst these was the Domesday Book of which Farley became custodian granting visiting antiquaries access to the Book and making transcripts for a fee. In later life Farley was to produce the first printed edition of Domesday Book. Following a Parliamentary order in 1767 Farley was appointed co-editor of the Domesday printing project in 1770 alongside Charles Morton of the British Museum. Abraham Farissol or Peritsol was a learned Jew from Avignon who compiled his cosmographical works at the court of the Estes in Ferrara. The present text was composed in 1524-25 and first published in Hebrew at Venice in 1586. The Latin translation and notes in the present edition were prepared by the English orientalist and librarian Thomas Hyde 1636-1703 with the assistance of R. Isaac Abendana working from a manuscript which Hyde located in the Bodleian Library. “Each of its 30 chapters deals with a certain geographical area or subject. In addition many cosmological and historical matters are also treated. The author collected all the evidence he could regarding Jewish settlements in each country. The inclusion of a description of the New World makes Farissol the first Hebrew writer to deal in detail with the newly-discovered America. The 14th chapter of Iggeret Orhot Olam which deals mainly with the settlements of the Ten Lost Tribes is of special interest. According to Farissol’s introduction to this chapter it is clear that what moved him to undertake this investigation was the appearance in Italy in 1523 of David Reuveni many of whose descriptions are included in this work†EJ 6.1185. Reuveni was "an adventurer who aroused messianic hopes in the early 16th century" EJ 14.114. The appended work is a tract on Islamic customs by Albert Wojciech Bobowski a Polish Christian who converted to Islam after his capture by the Ottoman Turks. Adopting the name Ali Ufki Bey he served as translator court musician at Topkapi and as a notator of Ottoman classical music. Bell F26. Christian Hebraism Cat. Harvard 1988 no. 39. ESTC R27480. The title page is illustrated with copper plate engravings in the form of small vignettes of biblical scenes surrounding the text. This is an early Spanish-language edition of the complete Jewish High Holiday prayer book Machzor based on the original translation by Abraham Usque originally printed in Ferarra Italy in 1553. This edition contains some added material not previously present including most prominently Solomon ibn Gabirol's famed philosophical poem "Keter Malkhut" Royal Crown which over the years has come to be read as part of the Yom Kippur service in some Jewish traditions.

This edition of the Machzor was published by David Fereira and Mosseh Moreno Henriques to serve members of the then sizable Sephardic Jewish community in Amsterdam. A significant portion of the community would have been ex-Marranos Jews who had outwardly converted to Catholicism during the inquisition in Spain who then immigrated and were able to reestablished their Jewish identity and thus were unable to read Hebrew hence the text's publication in Spanish. As stated in the foreword this edition includes some additions to the text not included in previous versions and omits some material deemed to have been unnecessary. The prayer book starts with the penitential prayers Selichot p.3-47 which includes decorative head and endpeices. This section is followed by the Rosh Hashanah service p.48-195 and then the Yom Kippur service including "Keter Malkhut" p.254-289. The title page is illustrated with scenes from the biblical stories of King David Saul and Goliath and contain small captions underneath with corresponding biblical passages in Spanish.

There are a number of pagination printing errors including: p.45-46 are misprinted as 54 and 36 p.264 is misprinted as 164. p.450 is misprinted as 350 p.414 is misprinted as 144. Like in the case of the earlier 1652 edition of the work pages 305-352 are misprinted as "321-368" but in this copy the leaf containing p. 353-354 directly following "368" seems to be missing. Overall this edition follows very closely the 1652 edition of the same work in terms of pagination content and organization. Includes large initials throughout the text. All text in Spanish.

Binding with rubbing scratches and abrasions to the covers spine and extremities. Some chipping to the head and tail of the spine. David ben Abraham de Castro 1630-1698 was a French-born Portuguese Jewish printer/publisher in Amsterdam. 106895London Printed for J. Wilcox 1738. . First edition 8vo 20.5 x 13 cm; xiv 96; 291 7 pp.; modern blue cloth boards; first and last leaf restored with some marginal loss of text; edges stained corners rubbed.
The earliest translation to English of the Jewish Prayer-book.

This comprehensive and occasionally rather critical study of Jewish life and practices is dominated by the first English translation of any part of the Siddur the definitive Jewish prayer-book. Translated by Abraham Mears under the pseudonym of Gamaleil Ben Pedahzur according to Roth an apostate member of the English Ashkenazi community it was intended as an exposition of Judaism rather than a service book but in providing phonetic translations of the Hebrew title of each prayer Mears explicitly promotes its use 'to Beginners in the Hebrew Tongue' and 'all Persons that resort to the Synagogues'. The transliterated Hebrew title for each prayer is found in the margins enabling the curious non-Hebrew reading Christian to attend and follow a synagogue service. The transliteration of the Hebrew characters provides a clue as to how Hebrew was pronounced in the eighteenth-century Ashkenazi community of London.

The book was not intended for liturgical use but rather for scholarly readership so it is not in effect a prayer-book. It reflects the growing interest in Judaism on the part of non-Jewish Englishmen of the eighteenth century.
ESTC T86072; Roth B8:6. London, Printed for J. Wilcox, 1738. hardcover

Born in todays Latvia he travelled extensively and recorded the musical traditions of the diasporic Jewish communities. Over the course of 20 years Idelsohn surveyed the musical traditions of various Jewish communities in Palestine and throughout the Diaspora including Babylonian Persian Bukharian Oriental Sephardi Moroccan German Eastern European and Hassidic communities and published the final volume of his collection in 1932. The two volumes offered here form part of his monumental and very rare work collecting the songs of the Yemenite and Babylonian Jews. Idelsohns survey and catalogue of the songs encompass Synagogal and Non-Synagogal songs comprising of songs for the Sabbath feasts and high feast working days as well as lamentations penitential songs and songs for other occasions and folk songs. In his monumental work he presented an extensive introduction to the musical culture of the Jewish tribes and extensive commentary on the variations within the chant. Idelsohns works were printed by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig the worlds oldest music publishing house and renowned for their high quality musical scores. Idelsohn travelled extensively. During his stay in Jerusalem he observed a rich variety of musical traditions among the Jewish communities there. By studying these traditional tunes he discovered recurring patterns and sequences unique to Jewish music. This led him to conclude that these musical phrases had a common origin dating back to the first century C.E in Israel and Palestine. He found that these motifs were categorized into three tonal centres corresponding to the Dorian Phrygian and Lydian modes of ancient Greece. Each of these modes produced a specific emotional response - the Dorian was used for elevated and inspired texts the Phrygian for sentimental and emotional texts and the Lydian for lamenting and confessions of sins. Idelsohn also categorized musical motives as those that prepare begin or conclude a musical phrase. In Jerusalem Idelsohn started his career as a cantor and music teacher at the Hebrew Teacher's College. He was deeply influenced by the diverse Jewish community in Palestine and embarked on a massive project to document their unique musical and linguistic traditions. He received a research grant from the Academy of Science in Vienna and a phonograph to assist with his field work. In 1914 he released the first volume of his landmark ten-volume work Thesaurus of Oriental Hebrew Melodies which focused on the Yemenite community in Palestine. Idelsohn was particularly interested in this community as he believed that their Hebrew pronunciation and musical heritage dated back to the first century CE and had remained relatively untouched by outside influences due to their migratory history and isolated location. With the owners mark of composer Ludovicus Mirandolle 1904-1974 in all volumes. 185711291857. Mixed method engraving.
A pair of mixed method engravings published by Gambart and Co. in 1857 in a declared edition of 225 pairs. The original paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1854. In the first picture the scene is the interior of a second class railway carriage with hard unpadded wooden benches. A young mother plainly dressed in a black coat bonnet and shawl clutches the hand of her young son who is evidently on his way to Portsmouth to join the service of the East India Company a recruiting poster is pasted to the wall above his head. His tearful sister sits on the bench opposite next to her brother's baggage a sailor is traveling with his wife in the background numerous posters advertising ship passages to Australia and India and other advertisements are stuck to the walls and ships in the harbour are visible through the carriage window. In the second picture the young man now considerably older has returned to England evidently having made his fortune. He sits in backview in a comfortably upholstered first class carriage wearing smart military uniform chatting to an elderly well dressed fellow passenger while exchanging glances with the old man's pretty fashionably dressed young daughter who sits demurely crocheting in a corner of the carriage. Abraham Solomon was a popular London artist and Simmons was a notable mezzotint engraver. The Departure has some faint spotting lower right corner in margin faint indentation in title area and repaired tear in margin outside the platemark on right hand side. The Return has a repaired tear on left hand side which enters the image about 4cm. It also has a repaired tear in top margin outside image area but within platemark.

unknown

182784953London: by the author and sold by all booksellers 1827. Shakespeare's portraits First edition published three years after James Boaden's work on the same subject. Wivell had risen from impoverished beginnings and an apprenticeship to a wigmaker and hairdresser before reaching public notice as an artist with portraits of the Cato Street conspirators awaiting trial. This led to a commission to draw portraits of the participants in the "trial" of Queen Caroline in the House of Lords thence to abundant portrait commissions from the royal family the aristocracy and leading theatrical figures. This publication however brought his prosperity to a sudden end as its sales failed to cover the expense of producing the plates reducing Wivell "from affluence to comparative poverty" Art Journal 206. He was rescued by an uncle's legacy and his own ingenuity subsequently inventing a rope fire escape that was credited with saving hundreds of lives. Jaggard notes that the edition size was 500 copies of which 50 had plates on India paper and 25 were printed on large paper. Octavo 207 x 135 mm in 2 parts the supplement with separate title.
