1603W2303Antwerp Belgium: Jan Baptiste Vrients 1603. 14 3/4 inches by 19 3/8 inches on a 16 5/8" by 21 3/4" sheet of laid paper. Latin text on the verso. van den Broecke 193. Abraham Ortelius was a Flemish scholar who moved to Antwerp to become a bookseller and cartographer. This map of ancient Spain is from his PARERGON published as an appendix to the THEATRUM ORBIS TERRARUM the world's first true atlas as well as the most authoritative and commercially successful atlas of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Although it is dated 1586 in one cartouche this map actually is a second state printed between 1601 and 1612 as indicated by the stipple engraving in the ocean & seas and by the line through the word "Cinniana" in line 8 of the descriptive text within the cartouche in the lower right corner. The map is in very good condition: generally clean and bright with barely a hint of toning and minor soiling limited to the blank margins. Madrid bookseller's stamp and brief handwritten comment and signature in the margin on the verso. Original. Single Sheet. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Map. Jan Baptiste Vrients

Decorative doublepage map showing six islands in the Mediterranean Islands Sicily Sardinia Corfu Malta Djerba Elba. Sicily is prominently displayed in the center of the map above the title cartrouche. Ortelius was born on 14 April 1527 in the city of Antwerp which was then in the Habsburg Netherlands modern-day Belgium. The Orthellius family were originally from Augsburg a Free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1535 the family had fallen under suspicion of Protestantism. Following the death of Ortelius's father his uncle Jacobus van Meteren returned from religious exile in England to take care of Ortelius. Abraham remained close to his cousin Emanuel van Meteren who would later moved to London. In 1575 he was appointed geographer to the king of Spain Philip II on the recommendation of Arias Montanus who vouched for his orthodoxy. He travelled extensively in Europe and is specifically known to have traveled throughout the Seventeen Provinces; in southern western northern and eastern Germany e.g. 1560 15751576; France 15591560; England and Ireland 1576; and Italy 1578 and perhaps twice or thrice between 1550 and 1558. Beginning as a map-engraver in 1547 he entered the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke as an illuminator of maps. He supplemented his income trading in books prints and maps and his journeys included yearly visits to the Frankfurt book and print fair where he met Gerardus Mercator in 1554. In 1560 however when travelling with Mercator to Trier Lorraine and Poitiers he seems to have been attracted largely by Mercator's influence towards the career of a scientific geographer. 59238Abraham Heidanus Frankenthal 1597-Leiden 1678 minister and from 1648 professor in Leiden; moderate but convinced Certasian. In this book which would be the reason of his discharge as professor he opposes the '20 posities' imposed by the trustees of the University and the Burgomaster of Leiden on which it was forbidden to lecture. These forbidden positions included the works by Coccejus Wittichius Cartesius Von Wolzogen: the last 'position' reads that philosophy is an explainer of the Word of God. Very rare. Only 6 copies of the first edition held in Dutch libraries.NL De auteur Abraham Heidanus was predikant en tot 1676 professor in Leiden. Good dark impression; some soiling and spotting mainly to blank margins; light creasing to centre fold and two horizontal creases to lower blank margin; very short tears to lower edge and corners somewhat ragged. Abraham Ortelius 1527-1598 Flemish Cartographer . produced the first modern Atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" in 1570. printed by Aegidus Coppen Diest. There were numerous editions thereafter with texts in various languages; the printing of such was taken over by Chrstoffel Plantijn in 1579 . Ortelius himself drew all the maps in manuscript before passing them to the printers. there is conjecture that he may have engraved some of the plates as well The 1595 Latin text edition is the most complete produced during his lifetime containing all the maps of the 1593 edition plus those of the the"Additamentum" and the"Pareragon" or Ancient geography. The " Additamenta" were supplements to the original Atlas; at the same time Ortelius replaced some maps with new ones showing the same place; some plates were also reworked . Ortelius was Geographer Royal To Phillip II of Spain from 1575. He also worked closely with Braun & Hogenburg on the "Civitas Orbis Terarum". After his death the plates were purchased by Jan Baptiste Vrients in 1601 who published further editions until 1612. 1863175681863. Lincoln Abraham. African Troops Scarce U.S. Senate executive document transmitting a message from Abraham Lincoln and accompanying State Department correspondence concerning the French deployment of Black troops to Mexico during the American Civil War. Issued by the 37th Congress 3rd Session in February 1863 the report reflects the convergence of emancipation-era policy racialized military labor and international imperial strategy.

U.S. Senate Executive Document No. 40 37th Congress 3rd Session; February 1863. Original printed pamphlet in standard folio format.Prepared under the direction of William H. Seward the document compiles diplomatic intelligence indicating that France transported African troops from Egypt-specifically from regions identified as "Dalfour" and Nubia-to reinforce forces stationed at Veracruz during the French Intervention in Mexico. The stated rationale as recorded in the report was that "the black race is not subject to the yellow fever" revealing the period's racialized medical assumptions and their direct application in imperial military logistics.

Produced in the immediate aftermath of the Emancipation Proclamation this document is especially significant for situating Black military labor within a global context. While the Union was actively recruiting African American soldiers U.S. officials were simultaneously monitoring European powers deploying African troops across colonial networks. The report thus provides rare contemporary evidence of how race disease theory and military necessity intersected in both American and European wartime policy. This document holds strong research value across multiple fields: African American military history Civil War diplomacy transnational slavery and emancipation colonial medicine and 19th-century imperial warfare. It is particularly notable for documenting the perceived biological resilience of Black soldiers as a strategic asset-an idea central to both colonial and military history. AS per OCLC Scarce in institutional holdings with only a small number of recorded copies including Wyoming North Texas Michigan and Faulkner University. OCLC data should be understood as approximate and subject to revision. Condition: Light dampstaining to the lower right blank corner; otherwise in very good condition and clean legible text. unknown

1860158491860. Lincoln Abraham. The Lincoln and Douglas Debates 1860 printed record of the seven public debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas during the 1858 Illinois Senate campaign a pivotal series of political confrontations over slavery and the future of the United States. The debates addressed the expansion of slavery into western territories and the constitutional implications of the Supreme Court's Dred Scott decision. Lincoln used the campaign to articulate a moral and political critique of slavery's expansion including the position he expressed in his earlier convention speech that "a house divided against itself cannot stand." Although Lincoln lost the Senate race to Douglas the debates established him as a leading national figure within the Republican Party and played a major role in shaping the political arguments that led to his presidential election in 1860.

Lincoln Abraham. Bound in publisher's original olive green textured cloth with blind stamped borders and spine lettered in gilt.

The Lincoln Douglas debates represented one of the most influential series of political exchanges in nineteenth century American history addressing the central constitutional and moral questions surrounding slavery in the years immediately preceding the Civil War. Douglas defended the doctrine of popular sovereignty arguing that territories should decide the legality of slavery for themselves while Lincoln challenged the compatibility of that doctrine with the Dred Scott decision and emphasized the moral consequences of the institution. Although Douglas retained his Senate seat Lincoln's articulate presentation of the issues drew national attention and positioned him as a major political figure within the emerging Republican Party.
