1994036603NY: Simon & Schuster. 1994. His first book a nonfiction account of being a physician caring for an unexpectedly large AIDS outbreak in eastern Tennessee. Inscribed by Verghese in 2002 to the medical historian Howard Markel who taught at the University of Michigan. Laid in is a typed note signed 2010 and a typed letter signed 2002 from Verghese to Markel--the former offering congratulations; the latter a thank you for hospitality during a visit to Ann Arbor. Additionally laid in is a 3-page copy of the remarks Markel made introducing Verghese for a speaking engagement. The letters and remarks are folded else fine; the book is fine but for lower corner bumps in a very near fine dust jacket with slight shelf wear. Verghese is the author of the highly praised novels Cutting for Stone and The Covenant of Water. Unless otherwise noted our first editions are first printings. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 105904Cologne Pierre Marteau 1690. 4to. 4 457; 219 49 267 1 pp. Title printed in red and black. Minor spotting and a few ink spots. Slightly worn contemporary full calf spine gilt with raised band and rubbed red label marbled boards tears on top of spine. Owner’s signature Schröder on title crossed over with ink. From the library of Fredrik von Friesendorff with his engr. bookplate. This classic and important work on diplomats and diplomatic skill was first published in The Hague in 1680-81. This is the expanded Marteau-edition from 1690. The Dutchman Abraham de Wicquefort 1606-1682 is the first author whose focus was on the actual diplomatic practise. “The purpose of this work was to describe what an envoy does and how he should conduct himself. He was on the threshold of a new development and gave the literature on diplomacy a new orientationâ€. Wicquefort was from 1642 Brandenburg’s diplomat in Paris but was imprisoned by Cardinal Mazarin in 1659 and expelled in 1660. He stayed in The Hague but was in 1679 imprisoned for life for high treason and he wrote “L'ambassadeur et ses Fonctions†in prison. Beside this book and a history of the Netherlands he also translated the travels by Olearius into French. hardcover

From this period he drew the information for his "Histoire du gouvernement de Venise" an unsparing description of the political constitution of the city-state published in Paris in 1676. After the publication the outraged protests of the Venetian ambassador led to La Houssaye being imprisoned in the Bastille. The scandal surrounding La Houssaye helped the work to become very popular so that he published a second edition with additions in 1677. The 'Supplément à l'histoire du gouvernement de Venise' provoked further protests from Venice so that the edition was finally banned in France. But even this ban only led to a greater demand for the book so that it was subsequently reprinted in secret. The note "Sur la Copie" on the title page but also the comparison of the types of printing used suggests that the present edition was not printed by Léonard in Paris.</p> Frédéric Léonard hardcover
