A few stray spots generally clean and unmarked internally. <br>"Cappel gained imperishable fame by his two books 'Arcanum Punctationis Revelatum' published anonymously by Thomas Erpenius at Leyden in 1624 and 'Critica Sacra' printed at Paris in 1650. In the 'Arcanum' he proved conclusively that the Hebrew text was first pointed after the Christian era until which time it had been composed merely of consonants; in the 'Critica' he proved that not even the consonantal text had been transmitted without errors but needed emendation with the help of the versions and of conjecture. It is to the lasting credit of Cappel that he was the first who dared to undertake with exemplary clearness penetration and method a purely philologic and scientific treatment of the text of the Bible." Heavily browned and irregularly discolored with some minor early marginalia with several corners or small chips repaired. "A Sermon." v 30 pages; Printed for Brabazon Aylmer London 1683. Title continues ".Chappel Octob. 29. 1682." Wing 2nd ed.; M685. There are a few small stains but the text reamains clean and in excellent condition. Bound in circa 1840 three quarter leather with marbled paper-covered boards; minor to moderate ubbing and shelfwear to the binding. Both of these are highly uncommon rarely offered on the market. Both are first editions. While these measure only 8 inches in height they are indeed quartos. Printed by James Cotterel Hardcover

Cloppenburgh 17th- or 18th-century gold-tooled calf sewn on 6 supports with corresponding raised bands on the spine with a red morocco title label lettered in gold in the second compartment. The boards show a very detailed floral patterned lozenge center-piece within a triple fillet frame with large highly detailed corner-pieces with remnants of ties. With an engraved title-page and 106 very vivid woodcut illustrations of tortured and/or executed martyrs several repeats the text alternately set in roman and gothic type. 14 632 46 ll. First edition of the first official Dutch Reformed Protestant martyrologium composed by Abraham Mellinus ca. 1580-1622. Born at Vlissingen Mellinus studied at Leyden and became Minister at St. Anthonispolder and Cellartshoek. The present "first" volume of his "History of Christian Martyrs" runs to 1520 it is the only volume ever published. It was dedicated by the author to Prince Maurits of Orange and to the Synode of Dordrecht who both rewarded the author with a good sum of money. The work showed great learning and was at the time much praised. The author planned to write a second volume but he died before this was really started. In 1622 Balthasar Lydius Minister at Dordrecht then was ordered to write the second volume but he also died so a second volume never appeared. Mellinus' Martyrologium especially enraged the Roman Catholics.With the bookplate of Paul Hildebrandt mounted on the front paste-down and an ownership stamp and inscription of "Ds. H.C. Hopkins militêre kamp Wynberg K. 31. 8. 1965." on the recto of the first flyleaf. The binding shows clear signs of wear the leather around the corners of the boards is somewhat damaged showing the paperboard beneath some loss of material at the head and foot of the spine. Internally fine and clean except for some very slight thumbing at the start of the work and a tear in one leaf. Otherwise in good condition.l Bibl. Belg. Modern bookplate of Gordon W. Jones M.D.</p> <p>First Edition of Georg Abraham Mercklin's considerably expanded version of van der Linden's bibliography of medicine. First published in 1637 Van der Linden's was the most complete medical bibliography of its time; it was also the most modern of early medical bibliographies both in its contents and format. Mercklin 1664-1702 supplied corrections biographical material on authors and additions that included the innovative listing of articles from the publications of learned societies.</p> <p>This copy is from the library of Johann Friedrich Blumenbach the founder of modern anthropology. He was the author of De generis humani varietate nativa 1775 in which he divided humanity into four races based on head shape skin color and hair type; he later added a fifth race and in the expanded third edition of De generis 1795 he introduced the famous terms "Caucasian Mongolian Ethiopian American and Malayan" to describe the "white yellow black red and brown" varieties of mankind. Also with woodcut vignettes on the title pages and woodcut initials. 2 works in 1 volume issued as 1. 64 200 10; 201 =203 4 pp. First edition of the Dutch translation of Léon de Modenes Historia degli riti hebraici 1637. The translation was made by the minor Utrecht poet Abraham Godart fl. 1666-1683 after the French translation which had appeared in 1682 in The Hague Céremonies et Coustumes parmi les Juifs The Hague Adriaan Moetjens 1682 and which was made by Richard Simon 1638-1712 a French priest member of the Oratorians who was an influential biblical critic orientalist and controversialist - Simon was early at odds with the Port-Royalists and Antoine Arnauld himself - using many pseudonyms such as here the pseudonym Simon Ville.The French translator Richard Simon added his own comments in a separate book Comparaison des ceremonies des Juifs which was also printed in 1682 in The Hague by the same publisher of Modenes work Adriaan Moetjens. The Dutch translator Abraham Godart also translated Simons additional text and the Amsterdam printer Timotheus ten Hoorn not only combined these two works in one book but also added the frontispiece and the plates of the 1682 French translation in reverse. At least six further editions of the two translations appeared from 1693 till 1744. Binding a little dust-soiled somewhat waterstained. Overall in good condition.l STCN 100016928 8 copies; cf.
