1788702L27Boston: John Norman 1788. First edition. Disbound. Fair. 7" by 4". None. An extremely scarce American almanac from the eighteenth century containing ephemerides. An early publication following American independence this work contains many astronomical notes. The first edition of this almanac containing many tables of ephemerides for the year 1789. Undated dated using Library Hub as 1788. Very scarce only seen at auction twice in the last forty years. Both times disbound - as issued Abraham Weatherwise was a pseudonym used for many almanacks from the years 1784 to 1788. It is believed that this is a pseudonym for Samuel Bullard. This is because the astronomical notes on the calendar pages parallle those in his 'An almanach for the year of the Christian aera 1789 Boston'. Disbound as issued lacking the half-title and bookseller's advertisement occasionally seen. This astronomical calendar was calculated for the meridian of Bostonm 'but will serve for the adjacent states'. A very scarce work. Disbound. Externally chipped to the extremities with handling marks and a light tidemark to the front wrap. Internally firmly bound. Chipping has affected the bottom seven entries of the tables which are slightly obscured due to a spill burn. Tidemark to the final three leaves not affecting the text. Occasional spots to pages. Gilt lettering and ruling on the spine. Modern endpapers. Profusely illustrated throughout with copperplate engravings. Includes both an initial illustrated title page with copperplate engravings surrounding the text Ma'aleh Bet Horin and a printed title page with decorative woodblock borders and the publisher's device. In addition to the Hebrew text a few sections throughout are in Judeo-German Yiddish printed in Vaybertaytsh script.<br /> <br /> This third edition of the famous Amsterdam Haggadah found the work reformatted into a smaller size and saw the title officially changed to Maleh Beit Horin meaning "house free men". Most of the same famous copperplate engravings by Abraham ben Jacob aka Abraham bar Yaccov that previously appeared in the 1695 and 1712 editions are retained here. The two images added to the 1712 second edition are included the illustrated order of the Seder and the complete ten plagues but four of the full series of images included in the first two editions are not present. These missing images are Abraham smashing the idols of his father Moses receiving the Ten Commandments a Mount Sinai Moses and Aaron coming to Pharaoh and the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. In our copy the engraved title and three other other engravings contain contemporary hand-coloring the rabbis of Bene Brak the Four Sons the angels visiting Abraham. <br /> <br /> The text of this third edition replaces the complete running commentary from Isaac Abravanel of the earlier editions with 3 additional text commentaries. These include the "Gevurot Hashem" from the Maharal of Prague Judah Loew ben Bezalel writings by Rabbi Moshe Alshich and "Olelot Ephraim" a collection of ethical homilies by Rabbi Shlomo Ephraim Luntschitz. However Abravanel's commentary is present following Yishtabach through the end of the Seder and in the initial six-leaf section preceding the text of the Passover seder which discusses the laws of Passover.<br /> <br /> This copy is lacking the original engraved map of the Holy Land at the rear as it was originally issued. Binding with some rubbing and abrasions to the original boards and spine. Interior with heaving staining to pages throughout with text still legible. Biding and interior in in good- condition overall. The work is one of only three surviving parts Tractates Bava Batra Sanhedrin and Kidushin plus the fourth chapter of Tractate Gittin from his larger series of his Talmudic commentaries known as Yad Ramah meaning "Hand of the Ramah" or "The Upraised Hand". The final section of the second volume contains Shiyur Shitah Mekubetset with its own title page a subsequent commentary on the work by Rabbi Bezalel Ashkenazi c. 1520 – c. 1592 and an approbation at the start of the first volume by editor Yosef Elia Halevi. Tiny chip possibly insect damage to back board near spine in 3 mm. "t" shape. Volume three: Pages numbered 1-344. Commentary on selections of the Zohar and other kabbalistic texts by Mordacai Ashkenazi published with the aid of his teacher Abraham Rovigo. These two kabbalists were both secret followers of the messianic claimant Sabbatai Sevi. Despite Sabbatai's conversion to Islam in 1666 and death in 1676 many of his followers continued to believe in him and worked to spread their particular heterodox brand of Judaism in defiance of the rabbinic establishment. As cover for his Sabbatian agenda Ashkenazi claimed that “Eshel Avraham†was simply a new interpretation of the Kabbalah based on his prophetic dreams. Ultimately this book is an important example of the success of the early eighteenth century Sabbatian underground to print books under the nose of the rabbinic authorities before it came out into the open with the printing of Nehemiah Hayon's “Migdal Oz.†Text in Hebrew. Backstrip missing but the book is still intact. Bottom corner chipped. Title-page torn and bottom strengthened. Slight worming to front leaves. Overall in fair condition. An endorsement to an arrest warrant for the confiscation of goods belonging to Samuel Barrow -- 1 page 11.5 x 10 inches with endorsement on verso Albany New York August 5 1787 -- ordered by Revolutionary War patriot and then-Chief Justice of the New York Supreme Court Richard Morris in very small part: "The people of New York - To The Sheriff of the County of Richmond - Greeting. We command you that of the Goods and Chattels Land and Tenements of the aforesaid Samuel Barrow in your Bailiwick being Debt in the sum of four-hundred and eighty pounds.for damages.have you whole monies before us at our City of Albany.Richard Morris Chief Justice." Bancker has placed his endorsement on the verso: "The within Saml. Barrows hasth Goods or Chattels in my Bailiwick whereof the Debt and damages or any part thereof can be made." It should be noted that the entire document is in the hand of and signed by: John McKesson 1734 - 1798 an Anti-Federalist New York Attorney and staunch Revolutionary War patriot who was appointed to the Provincial Convention 1775 all four Provincial Congresses 1775 - 1777 and to the First and Second Councils of Safety. He also served as clerk of the State Assembly and to the Ratifying Convention 1788 of which he is said to have participated in the hostile negotiations which eventually led to New York finally ratifying the U.S. Constitution. This document is in very good condition with heavy natural folds and coincidentally was signed by Bancker and McKesson on the very day August 5 1787 that the first draft of the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights was completed.<br/><br/> American patriot and major in the American Revolution who as a representative of Richmond County Staten Island cast an important vote in the ratification of the United States Constitution by the state of New York. The final vote was 30 to 27 and the failure to ratify might may have brought down the fledgling nation. Soon after the Revolutionary War Bancker was appointed Sheriff of the County of Richmond.<br/><br/> unknown books

He argued that the Federalists were deluding the people in order to enslave them under a monarchy and castigated the union of church and state in Connecticut charging the clergy with preaching Federalist propaganda. From Wikipedia; <br /> <br /> The Yazoo land scandal Yazoo fraud Yazoo land fraud or Yazoo land controversy was a massive real estate fraud perpetrated in the mid-1790's by Georgia governor George Mathews1 and the Georgia General Assembly. Georgia politicians sold large tracts of territory in the Yazoo lands in what are now portions of the present-day states of Alabama and Mississippi to political insiders at very low prices in 1794. Although the law enabling the sales was overturned by reformers the following year its ability to do so was challenged in the courts eventually reaching the US Supreme Court. In the landmark decision in Fletcher v. Peck 1810 the Court ruled that the contracts were binding and the state could not retroactively invalidate the earlier land sales. It was one of the first times the Supreme Court had overturned a state law and it justified many claims for those lands.<br /> <br /> Some of the lands sold by the state in 1794 had been shortly thereafter resold to innocent third parties greatly complicating the litigation. In 1802 because of the ongoing controversy Georgia ceded all of its claims2 to lands west of its modern border to the U.S. government in exchange for which the government paid cash and assumed the legal liabilities. Claims involving the land purchases were not fully resolved until legislation passed in 1814 established a claims-resolution fund.<br /> <br /> The Yazoo land fraud is often conflated with the Pine Barrens speculation another land scandal which took place in east Georgia at about the same time. In this case the state's high-ranking officials were making multiple gifts of land grants for the same parcels resulting in the issuance of grants totaling much more land than was available in the state of Georgia. Famous drawing book of Abraham Bloemaert 1564-1651 a very influential Dutch painter and art teacher. It contains 140 numbered engraved plates with no text providing models for drawing parts of the human body including eyes ears noses faces hands feet arms legs busts heads hair styles and beards some for men women and children as well as human figures and character types in various postures kinds of movement also including men women and children. Four plates give models for drawing animals and animal's heads including horses cats a dog a fish a lion and cattle. In good condition and with generous margins with a small tear and minor smudges in the title-page the first and last leaves slightly browned and a few unobtrusive restorations.
