Single odd volume from this extraordiary production containing hundreds of pages of illustrations under the heading natural history disbound no covers outer leaves dog-eared a little foxing at edges but not extending into the actual illustrations. The illustrations are all in monochrome beautifully done arresting images on almost every page. Includes mammals birds sea creatures insects some botany and fossils and crystallography towards the end. Includes the famous Sukotyro indicus a non-existend pseudo elephant. 18065649Philadelphia: Samuel F. Bradford and Murray Fairman and Co. Fair. 1806. Leather Bound. Complete set of 41 volumes plus 6 illustrated volumes published between 1806 and 1820 in half-volume jobs. This is the US edition of the British original published between 1802 and 1820. All books appear to be complete except for some blank endpages of Illustrated Volume I. Covers are quite worn and four front covers are detached Volumes I VI X and Illustrated I and two more noticeably loose Volume VIII and Illustrated II. Illustrated I has tapemarks from poor repair work and the title page is torn. On most volumes the title pastedowns on spine have fallen off. Three volumes have a little water damage most extensively on Volume XV -- but even that is isolated mainly to cover and endpages. Volume XVI has child's drawings on one blank endsheet. On Illustrated III the foldouts are worn on the edges but still intact. Some foxing but no mold. Occasional creases and waviness. Ex-owner plate in each volume "The property of Phineas J. Miller bequeathed to him by his uncle Phineas Janney and his aunt Sarah S. Janney. 1852-3." All in all despite the wear to the covers the set is nicely preserved. ; Vol. 1/1/2047 . Samuel F. Very good. Rare broadside advertising gold jewelry and "Patent Embossed Carte de Visites.of all noted personages." from Salisbury Bro. & Co. of Providence Rhode Island. The text describes a large stock of photographs offered at wholesale prices to retailers across the country. The broadside has a vignette of the Salisbury factory in the top quarter of the sheet with a dense cascade of text in a variety of different fonts below. The lower third of the sheet is devoted to descriptions of images of Lincoln and the Civil War advertising three different Lincoln images and the promise "Our Picture of Lincoln is the best ever taken. All others as good as ever sold by any one." They also offer images of other prominent Civil War personages as well as "Booth the Assassin Robert E. Lee Jeff Davis and other prominent Rebels all at the same price. Also we have the ASSASSIN'S VISION and the ASSASSIN'S DOOM on full Cards." <br> <br> This broadside is primarily directed towards retailers as opposed to private customers and provides costs for bulk orders of up to 1000 cartes de visite. They claim their prices are "500 per cent. less than any dealers ever have." with prices starting at $7 for 100 and up to $100 for 1000 depending on the image. Although Salisbury Bros. & Co.'s cartes de visite and other photographic products are easily accessible in many libraries we could find no record of this broadside. Good.<br/><br/> Abraham Paul was a successful busy New York publisher and printer. "William and Peter C. Smith publishers were charged with conspiracy to ruin the business of another publisher Abraham Paul. They placed fictitious orders with him and cut the price of their edition of a Bible commentary which was also published by Paul" Cohen. This trial pamphlet prints the indictment and summarizes statements of counsel the testimony the charge of the court to the jury. <br/> William Smith had "made unfriendly declarations against Paul as to his business." He had also made statements of his intention to "take every advantage of Paul he could." Other circumstances and declarations indicated his guilt; but the evidence against Peter Smith was very shaky. The court indicated that a verdict of 'Not Guilty' was appropriate and the jury agreed. Since the defendants had been charged with conspiracy and the involvement of Peter was doubtful no conspiracy existed. Hence the acquittal.<br/>Cohen 12219. Sabin 103189.
