1865WRCAM56487Providence: Salisbury Bro. & Co. 1865. Illustrated broadside 12 1/2 x 8 inches. Old folds. Remnants of a label on verso a few small chips to edges uneven tanning light foxing. Very good. Rare broadside advertising gold jewelry and "Patent Embossed Carte de Visites.of all noted personages." from Salisbury Bro. & Co. of Providence Rhode Island. The text describes a large stock of photographs offered at wholesale prices to retailers across the country. The broadside has a vignette of the Salisbury factory in the top quarter of the sheet with a dense cascade of text in a variety of different fonts below. The lower third of the sheet is devoted to descriptions of images of Lincoln and the Civil War advertising three different Lincoln images and the promise "Our Picture of Lincoln is the best ever taken. All others as good as ever sold by any one." They also offer images of other prominent Civil War personages as well as "Booth the Assassin Robert E. Lee Jeff Davis and other prominent Rebels all at the same price. Also we have the ASSASSIN'S VISION and the ASSASSIN'S DOOM on full Cards." This broadside is primarily directed towards retailers as opposed to private customers and provides costs for bulk orders of up to 1000 cartes de visite. They claim their prices are "500 per cent. less than any dealers ever have." with prices starting at $7 for 100 and up to $100 for 1000 depending on the image. Although Salisbury Bros. & Co.'s cartes de visite and other photographic products are easily accessible in many libraries we could find no record of this broadside. Reminiscences of a Naval Officer during the Late War.

Navy life so full of incident as to suggest Marryat Forester or O'Brian First edition scarce this attractive copy in its smart original navy-blue cloth binding is apparently the only one currently on the market. Although "the opening pages are touched by the verbosity of the early Victorians read on. Quickly the veneer is torn away by the vigour of his memories springing from the past like boarders with cutlass pistol and boarding-pike" Pocock p. vii. Born in Lismore County Waterford Crawford 1785-1869 entered the navy in 1800 as a first class volunteer on board HMS Diamond "in which he assisted in the capture of many of the enemy's ships armed and otherwise" O'Byrne. He transferred to the Immortalité and Clyde frigates under Admiral Owen as a midshipman "and appears to have been almost daily in action from June 1802 until Aug. 1806 with detachments of the Boulogne flotilla". With Duckworth on the Royal George at the forcing of the Dardanelles in 1807 Crawford was present at the destruction of a Turkish squadron off Point Pesquies. Promoted lieutenant in the Sultan he was involved in frequent cutting out operations in the Gulf of Genoa taking part in the pursuit of the French ships of the line Robuste and Lion in 1809. In 1810-11 he served under Admiral Carew in the blockade of Toulon and support of the Catalonian insurgents on the coast being present at the siege of Tarragona. Promoted commander in 1815 he was given command of the Grasshopper on the West India Station where he served until invalided home in 1829. Tom Pocock praises the quality of Crawford's descriptions of naval actions the sea and his portraits of fellow officers as in the postprandial face of one lieutenant assuming "the hue of an unripe mulberry". Crawford also talks of Congreve rockets Fulton's torpedoes and the transformation of the quarterdeck of a frigate into a dancefloor for an onboard ball. 2 vols octavo. Tissue-guarded lithographic portrait frontispieces of admirals Sir Edward Owen and Sir Benjamin Hallowell Carew by R. J. Hamerton printed by Metchin; publisher's 24-page catalogue at end of vol. II. Original navy-blue cloth gilt-lettered spines with decoration in blind covers with blind decorative panels pale yellow coated endpapers bearing publisher's advertisements. Spines cocked a few marks to covers internally cracked at gutter in one or two places but firm pale brown stain across vol. II pp. 28-9: very good. Senate Report 38th Congress 1st Session. Senate Rep. Com. No. 68.On April 12 1864 1500 Confederate troops under Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked a Union outpost at Fort Pillow Tennessee. After four hours of intense fighting Forrest demanded the garrison surrender. Although outnumbered almost three to one the Union troops inside the fort at first refused. Confederate forces eventually captured the position. According to survivors Confederate troops motivated by racial hatred proceeded to kill Union prisoners as they pleaded for their lives. It is unclear how many were killed after the surrender but first-hand accounts suggest that the numbers were high. Of 262 black soldiers at Fort Pillow only 58 survived to be taken prisoner; of 395 white soldiers 168 survived as prisoners.On May 3 President Lincoln sent a letter like this one to each of the members of his cabinet. Three days later Lincoln held a cabinet meeting at which each cabinet member read his opinion on the appropriate response. All agreed that the U.S. government should demand "an explanation" from the Confederacy. Seward Chase Stanton and Welles advised holding Confederate prisoners equal in numbers to the Union troops massacred as hostages; if the Confederate government avowed the massacre those prisoners would be executed. Usher Bates and Blair strongly disagreed with Blair pointing out that such a response "would not be justified by the rules of civilized warfare." Bates concurred noting that "retaliation is not mere justice. It is avowedly revenge; and it is wholly unjustifiable in law and conscience."Little formal action beyond a Congressional investigation took place. Perhaps the greatest impact that Fort Pillow had was on the morale of black troops.
