2 vols., 8vo., Fourth Edition, neat contemporary signature on blank preliminary; elegantly bound in contemporary full tan calf, sides with multiple frame border stopped at corners with gilt rosettes, back with five raised bands ruled in gilt, second compartments with red leather labels framed and lettered in gilt, third compartments framed and lettered in gilt, all other compartments elaborately framed and tooled in gilt, marbled edges, gilt doublures, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, a most attractive copy in wholly unrestored period binding. THE BINDING IS SIGNED ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER VERSOS. Henry Stamper (1802?-1887), master bookbinder, was an associate of Bedford, Lewis, Clarke and Morrell; indeed he may have succeeded Bedford as manager of the Lewis bindery, and his later business passed to Morrell. Magnifica raccolta di 15 tavole (al vivo mm. 300x460) disegnate da Eugène Adam e litografate da Jules Adam, introdotte da un bellissimo frontespizio figurato, pure litografato; tutte sono precedute da una pagina di descrizione in tedesco e in francese. Dall’introduzione apprendiamo che l’artista svizzero ha concepito “l’idéé de consacrer ses pinceaux à l’illustration d’une campagne simplement simulée, exécutée au sein de la paix.. en faisant un heureux mélange de scènes guerrières avec les scènes majestueuses de la nature des Alpes.. En 1861 la Suisse se trouve attaquée sur toute sa frontière méridionale..”. 3 vols., 8vo., Sixth Edition, early nineteenth-century signature on titles, some light and inoffensive spotting to a few leaves, some very ight marginalia in pencil only; strongly and attractively bound in nineteenth century half calf, boards in dark green diced cloth, backs with five raised bands tooled in gilt, second and fourth compartments with red leather labels ruled, lettered and numbered in gilt, red sprinkled edges, a remarkably well-preserved, crisp, clean copy in later period binding. One of 2000 copies printed. 'The Wealth of Nations', coming at a point when 'natural liberty' was being being widely debated, had a decisive influence both on the study of national economy and on the freeing of economic policy from the artificial restraint of the mercantilist system. Smith's statement that labour is the source of a nation's commodities and that the variation in 'stock' values are due to the interaction of wages, profits and rent, formulated the doctrine of the classic school of economic thought, and round it all modern economic discussion has revolved' (PMM).
