He was member of the State house of delegates in 1870 and 1876; reelected in 1878 and served as speaker; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-seventh and Forty-eighth Congresses March 4 1881-March 3 1885; city counselor of Baltimore in 1888 and 1889. Contemporary cloth printed paper title label to spine. Some rubbing to extremities corners bumped front joint just starting at head light fading to spine and parts of boards. Armorial bookplate of Woburn Abbey dated 1873 to front pastedown "Bedford" in bold hand to front free endpaper one leaf partially detached but secure. Faint dampstaining to foot of text block light foxing internally clean. $150. Only edition. This is a supplement to Adam's Practical Treatise and Observations on Trial by Jury in Civil Causes 1836. Adam produced this "supplement" to answer the objections of the dean of faculty of the University of Edinburgh to his doctrine on bills of exception and elaborate his argument. The signature "Bedford" is probably that of William Russell 1809-1872 Eighth Duke of Bedford and the owner of Woburn Abbey or his son Francis Charles Hastings Russell 1819-1891 Ninth Duke. Full leather binding with gilt lettering on the spine. The book features a fold-out map titled "The Roman Empire - Exhibiting its Coasts & Internal Divisions with the Principal Naval & Military Stations." There is an engraved frontispiece portrait of Ferguson and an engraved title page illustration.</p><p>Condition:<br />There are some scratches to the leather at the right edge of the front cover and at the left ege of the back cover. Light wear to the cover corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Consistent mild foxing to the text pages though heavier on the end papers and pastedowns otherwise clean. The folding map is firmly attached and in nice condition with only some foxing. 1886006105Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black 1886. Here is an early edition of a Black's Guide to Ireland stated as the ineteenth Edition. Green limp cloth covers decorated on the front cover with an Irish harp in gilt; titling and shamrock decorations on the spine in gilt. Clean text;350 pages. Text is followed by 116 pages of rather fascinating adverts. Front endpapers are a map of Ireland; the rear ones have a listing of Black's other guides.The half-title page has an inked name "Capt. Rogers.1919" and the second free endpaper a peciled name and price dated 1940. One of the interesting features: the fore-edge has several destiation points stamped with a page number. Opening "Killarney" will easily lead one to the fold-out map of the Lakes.The maps are complete but with tears evident. The front gutter has been cracked resulting in a loose feel to the book and would reward a minor reinforcents. . Later Printing. Very Good Minus/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
