Adam produced this "supplement" to answer the objections of the dean of faculty of the University of Edinburgh to his doctrine on bills of exception and elaborate his argument. The signature "Bedford" is probably that of William Russell 1809-1872 Eighth Duke of Bedford and the owner of Woburn Abbey or his son Francis Charles Hastings Russell 1819-1891 Ninth Duke.
