Durante la sua vita egli compì numerosi viaggi non solo in Germania ma anche in Svizzera, Austria e Italia. Interessanti sono le sue acqueforti, circa cinquecento, che ritraggono in chiave romantica paesaggi, persone e vedute con animali; ci restituiscono uno spaccato dei costumi borghesi e popolari dell'epoca. In questa stampa viene raffigurato, in un paesaggio desolato, spoglio e roccioso un asino da soma. È in piedi di profilo sul fianco sinistro. Sta mangiando del fieno da una sacca da naso piuttosto elaborata e indossa paraocchi. La postura conferisce dinamismo all’animale, giochi chiaroscurali descrivono la pelliccia ispida tipica degli asini in maniera molto realistica. Firma con monogramma e data in lastra, in basso a destra. Titolo in tedesco a matita oltre l'immagine. Bibliografia: Jahn 1863, 260.
