elala3110Montreal: Printed At The Office Of The Herald And New Gazette 1830. First Edition. The author emigrated to Canada from Ireland and published only this one volume of poetry which he dedicated to British poet Thomas Moore. Kidd died a tragic early death at the age of twenty-nine. He claims to have written the ‘Huron Chief’ on the inner rind of birch bark during his travels through the immense forests of America. “The innocent and unassuming friendly treatment that I experienced among the Indians together with the melancholy recital of the deep wrongs which they received from those calling themselves “Christians†induced me to undertake this dramatic poem. From the days of the American Revolution until this very hour the poor Indians have been so cruelly treated and driven from their homes and hunting-grounds by the boasted freemen of the United States that the Mohicans the Naragansetts the Delawares and others once powerful Tribes have now become totally extinct – while the remaining Nations are daily dwindling away and in a few years hence will scarcely leave a memorial to perpetuate their names as the once mighty rulers of the vast American regions…Many of the Indians Tribes have emigrated into Canada – and are now prospering and happily enjoying the manly protection of the British Government.†Preface Dionne III 228. 1916Philhellenic: London "Drawn from life and Pub.d in London by A Friedal." 1826. Black & white lithograph portrait of Petro MavroMichlaeli from the second edtion of Friedals "Series of Greek Portraits" verso blank. Portrait bust; printed signature in Greek. Petros "Mavromichalis" Pierrakos Greek: Î ÎÏ„Ïος ΜαυÏομιχάλης 1765 – 1848 also known as Petrobey In 814 the Maniots again became a threat to the Ottomans and the Sultan offered a number of concessions to Pierrakos including his being named Bey or Chieftain of Mani - in effect formalizing the de facto status of autonomy the region had maintained for years. In 1818 he became a member of the Filiki Eteria On March 17 1821 Petrobey raised his war flag in Areopolis effectively signaling the start of the Greek War of Independence. His troops marched into Kalamata and took the city on March 23. Some light spotting. Adam de Friedal there is much confusion about Friedal's origins He is supposed to be a Danish Phihellene and apparently passed himself off as a Baron. St Clair tells us that Friedal carried a lithographic press on his back whilst in Greece where he seems to have been between 1821-24. He was at Missolonghi for a while with Lord Byron and married the sister of one of Byron's artificers John Hodges. Byron wrote a letter introducing Friedal to the notice of the London Greek Commitee. Friedal returned and settled in London and produced his first portrait of Mavrocordato dated September 1824. "The Greeks. Twenty-four Portraits In Four Parts Of Six Portraits Each of the Principal Leaders and Personages Who Have Made Themseves Most Conspicuous in the Greek Revolution." 1st edition 1824. thereafter there are a number of editions with differences to the portraits. The portraits in the 1st Edition probably after Friedal's original drawings are fairly primitive with each new edition they became more refined. A second edition of the first 2 parts was issued in 1826. Some of these plates are marked 'second edition' others merely have anew date on the plate surface. In most cases a completely new portrait replaces that of the previous ediion; parts 3 & 4 are unchanged. In 1827 two editions appeared with the imprint "London and Paris 1827" some on India paper. one in which the portraits had no or a very simple background the other with full complex backgrounds. A French edition appeared the same year. In 1828-9 Dean & Munday brought out another series of Friedal plates some but not all marked 'fourth edition' their most distinguishing feature being that they are full length. They re- issued a number of plates in 1830 marked fifth and sixth edition. There exist wrappers for a 'sixth edition 'appearing in 1832. Navari. 18026235Paris: Chez H. Agasse 1802. 5 vols. 8vo pp. iv cxxvii i 368 engraved frontispiece portrait; ii 493 1; ii 564; ii 556; ii 588. Nineteenth-century pebbled brown cloth spines divided by blind rules lettered in gilt boards bordered with double blind rules pale blue silk bookmarks. Some foxing tiny hole to single leaf affecting a few letters. Spines rubbed. The concealed corrected second edition of French poet Comte Germain Garnier’s 1754-1821 translation of Smith’s Wealth of Nations. Kenneth Carpenter notes that though there were two other French translations that preceded this one ‘Garnier’s new translation was in all ways the most desirable’ with an essay on Smith his portrait and an extra volume of notes. Often described as a corrected issue of the first edition this is in fact a reprint from an entirely new setting of type given the original date of 1802 probably to avoid the prepublication censorship regime introduced in February 1810. From the Publisher : "This series of limited edition hand-bound books by Adam McLean were initially produced between 1979 and 1986. They were never sold through book dealers but only by direct mail order. Consequently these books became collectors items often fetching high prices on the second-hand market. This late Eighteenth Century work is preserved in two manuscripts. It is almost completely unknown. It consists of a series of seven 'keys' presenting the alchemical work in a sequence of twenty two emblematic figures. These are provided with explanatory texts providing practical explanations of the allegorical imagery. The allegorical images present a kind of alchemical drama featuring as its main characters Vulcan Apollo Diana Mercury Saturn and the alchemical adept. It follows the conventional alchemical idea of the sequence of colour changes - black through white to red. It uses the idea of the hermaphrodite and bird symbols. This work could well be the last alchemical emblematic sequence ever to have been created.". First Edition Limited. Hardcover/Hand Made by McLean. As New.
