With frontispiece of a gentleman bowing courteously to a lady. A Large Paper Copy. Front pastedown with bookplate of Philip Shirley. Heltzel Newbury Library Courtesy Books 1135; Lowndes III 1842. A little wear to joints and extremities well hidden by refurbishment a few superficial marks to covers otherwise a perfectly sound and not unattractive binding. Offsetting from frontispiece onto title a few other imperfections in the text small spots short tear to one leaf otherwise a nearly fine copy internally with thick paper that is fresh and clean with deep impressions of the type and with vast margins.

This is a very pleasing copy of a work consisting of 15 chapters containing a great many admonitions relating to what is proper with regard to clothing walking and travelling visits gratitude salutations speech writing eating and drinking "marriage and uncleanness" plays and recreations acts of justice observation of the Lord's Day "carriage in the Church" gift giving and commerce. As the 1835 preface tells us "Petrie who has been facetiously called the Scottish Chesterfield is generally understood to have begun life as a domestic tutor in the family of Sinclair of Stevenstoun and to have ended it as a parish schoolmaster in East Lothian. His 'Rules of Good Deportment' may be taken as the result of his artless observations upon the manners of a class of society to which he was probably admitted only as a humble spectator. From the manifest sincerity however of his delineations of 'Good Breeding' and the graphic character of many of his scenes it may fairly be presumed that they were painted from nature--and they present probably less of a caricature of Scottish manners early in the 18th century than might at first be imagined." It is known that Scott had begun but did not finish the project of reprinting this work for the Bannatyne Club and the frontispiece prepared for that edition is used here. Both the first edition of 1720 and this 1835 reprint are infrequently encountered on the market. unknown
55471London & Paris 1827. Original hand-coloured lithograph. Overall sheet size 40 x 27 cm. "There is some confusion as to Friedel's origins. He is supposed to be a Danish philhellene and was apparently passing himself off as a baron. St. Clair tells us that Friedel carried a lithographic press on his back though Greece that he was at Missolonghi for a while with Byron and that he married the sister of John Hodges one of Byron's artificers. A letter from Byron introducing Friedel to the notice of the London Greek Committee is known. Whatever the actual facts Friedel seems to have been in Greece from about 1821 to mid-1824. He settled in England and his first lithograph Mavrocordato appears with the date September 1824" Navari. London & Paris, 1827 unknown

177517573London 1775. Engraving by P. Begbie. In excellent condition with the exception of two tears on right margin. A fine architectural engraving of ornate mirrors and tables from Robert Adam's seminal work on British architecture.

Robert and his brother James Adam forever changed the face of British architecture by introducing innovative Classical design ideas. From 1754-57 Robert lived in Italy where he had a long productive friendship with Piranesi which was inspirational for both men. Adam's first book on Diocletian's palace in Dalmatia is clearly very like the archaeological investigations Piranesi was making at the same time of similar ruins. Piranesi's friendship and passion for Roman Classicism were seminal influences on Adam and the greatest single factor other than his own talent in the work Adam produced on his return to England. Upon his return the brothers launched their career by building the Adelphi from the Thames to the Strand in London which although not a commercial success at the time included one of London's most cherished buildings the Adlephi Theatre. Together the Adam brothers designed and built some of the most famous buildings in England including such bastions of English architecture as Kenwood House Keddlestone Manor and Syon House. To the interiors of their English country houses the Adams brought wonderful ornamental elements in niches lunettes festoons and reliefs. Their classically designed buildings were so numerous in London that they changed the prevailing feel of the city and established their brand of neo-Classicism as the model of elegance and importance. It is asserted that the brothers originated the concept of the uniform facade attached to the typical English row house an architectural device that distinguishes London buildings. This monumental contribution is evidenced in the Adams' designs for Portland Place and Fitzroy Square and these were used as architectural models for the whole city. The brothers brought their talents into other areas by designing furniture to complement their beautiful interiors and by creating and publishing a treatise of design entitled 'Works in Architecture'. The work was published in three volumes over an extended span of time beginning in 1773 with the final volume being published posthumously in 1822.

Cf. Brunet I.47; cf.
