1817241040United Kingdom: Joseph Butterworth 1817. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12. N/a. On offer a scarce - what appears to be a first edition - 8 volume set in contemporary leather bindings of the great Weslyan Arminian commentary by Dr Adam Clarke 1762-1832. Volume I is missing the title page but has the half title page which simply states: 'Dr. Adam Clarke's Commentary on the Old Testament. Volume I. Containing Genesis Exodus Leviticus and Numbers'. There are however half-titles and title pages to all other volumes including the New Testament commentary in 3 volumes - published by J. Butterworth and Son so I am reasonably sure that the Old Testament one is missing and dated 1817 and all other volumes. This set complete with fold-out maps and plates. This set bears the bookplate of George Birch Johnston who I believe was born in Glynn Co. Antrim in March 1811 for this came out of a library with other Irish material but it may be another George Birch Johnston. The Clarke Commentary was very much a Weslyan-Armenian Biblical exposition and provided a counter to the more Calvinist commentaries. It is therefore important in Christian and Methodist church history. Spurgeon famously joked about keeping his John Gill a strictly Calvinist commentator and Adam Clarke a strong Arminian commentaries separated on his bookshelf so they wouldn't "wake him up at night with their arguing". He used the more moderate commentary of Philip Doddridge as a buffer between them. Bound in contemporaneous leather. The fore-edges contemporaneously marbled There is some insect damage to the leather - chiefly to the leather around the joints - more significant to the tail of the Old Testament Number III 1st King's. This also has some more notable scratching to leather to the rear board - Likewise - some damage - 2cm in lengthto the tail of the front joint - volume 4 psalms. Some splitting to the lower external joint of volume I - about 8cm in length. Also some rubbing to the heads/tails of the spines and to some board corners. The text blocks remain very clean with spotting chiefly to the endpapers but scattered elsewhere to some volumes. There is an expertly repaired tear to one page in the first Old Testament volume. A scarce and still handsome 8 volume set which appear to all be first editions. Joseph Butterworth hardcover

Lucas van Leyden 1494 8 August 1533 also named either Lucas Hugensz or Lucas Jacobsz was a Dutch engraver and painter born and mainly active in Leiden. He was among the first Dutch exponents of genre painting and is generally regarded as one of the finest engravers in the history of art. Lucas was first trained by his father Huygh Jacobszoon; later he entered the workshop of Cornelis Engelbrechtszoon a painter of Leiden. His paintings as well as his prints reveal his unique approach to subject matter and style though Lucas is more highly regarded today as a printmaker than as a painter. He was extraordinarily precocious. unknown

Christie original typescript and carbon copy typescript; the other volumes xeroxed typescript. About very good. A group of six detective novels and one volume of short stories in Russian translation illegally published and circulated in samizdat form presumably in the mid to late 1970s. With the exception of the volume of Agatha Christie stories which is a compilation of original and carbon copy typescripts possibly from various contributors they consist of xerox-copied typescript which has been resized and amateur-bound. One of the volumes is identified as having been published in Kazan' in 1975 though the rest feature no indication of places of production.

Contents: Carter Brown "Ne ortodoksal'nyi trup: roman" Carter Brown "Zhena na voskresen'e" Kazan' 1975 Carter Brown "Ubiistvo - zavtra: roman" Agatha Christie collection of fourteen short stories; Adam Saint-Moore "Pokhishchenie: roman" Adam Saint-Moore "Fasanzh i mumiia blondinki" and Rex Stout "Gremuchaia zmeia: roman."

While none of the authors gathered here were explicitly prohibited from publication they would have been published selectively. Wholesale interest in Anglo-American crime fiction would have been considered trivial and not consistent with the cultural outlook of a Soviet citizen. unknown
