2006932711
Glasgow: Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks 2006. AS NEW - Signed/Dated/Hand Numbered by McLean - 14th August 2006. RARE - "The Rosary of the Philosophers special Hand coloured edition has been produced as an edition bound by hand and limited to 100 copies only of which 75 are for sale". From the Publisher : "This series of limited edition hand-bound books by Adam McLean were initially produced between 1979 and 1986. They were never sold through book dealers but only by direct mail order. Consequently these books became collectors items often fetching high prices on the second-hand market. A new edition of the Rosarium philosophorum originally published in the Magnum Opus series in 1980 but long out of print. This is one of the key early printed books on alchemy and is a very important summary of many of the ideas current in 15th and early 16th century alchemy. For this edition my 1980 transcription of manuscript Ferguson 210 held in Glasgow University Library has been extensively reworked to make the text more readable by modernising the English attempting to normalise the capitalisation clearing up punctuation and splitting some of the longer sections of text into more manageable paragraphs. This is not a scholarly or exact edition for in order to provide that someone would have to translate the work anew from the original Latin. This book instead is an attempt to make the 18th century translation as accessible as possible. I have included in this edition my coloured versions of the woodcuts. Though some of the original printed books had hand-coloured woodcuts these were quite crudely executed and I have instead based my colouring for this edition on the more subtle colouring found in the later manuscripts. Limited edition of 100 copies of which 75 are for sale. 119 pages. 21 coloured illustrations. A5 Hardbound.". First English Edition/Revised Text. Hardcover/Hand Made by McLean. As New. Illus. by Frontispiece / 20 Illustrations Coloured By Hand. 8vo size - 8½" tall.
Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks hardcover

Adam Smith's 1723-1790 work is the first major expression of organized study of social wealth. "'The Wealth of Nations' is not a system but as a provisional analysis it is completely convincing. The certainty of its criticism and its grasp of human nature have made it the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought." PMM 221. The present much admired French translation of Smith's "Wealth of Nations" by the French poet and economist Comte Germain Garnier 1754-1821 became the standard definitive French text. Palgrave 1894-1901. Garnier's elegant Preface to this edition contains a summary of the doctrine of Smith a comparison between the same and that of French economists and a parallel between the wealth of France and that of England. Handbill advertising a "bus brigade" to Washington for the opening of Congress in 1961 in support of Congressman Adam Clayton Powell. Powell would be seated as chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor starting in 1961 after fifteen years as a Congressman. This flyer continues "Don't let them unseat Adam! Join the bus brigade leaving Tuesday January 10th - 3:00 A.M. for Opening of Congress from Alfred E. Isaac Dem. Club 2495 7th Avenue $8.00 round trip return same day". It advertises three locations one can purchase tickets and the event is sponsored by the Committee to Seat Powell. Powell was an important but controversial figure in the Civil Rights movement helping to desegregate schools and pass other key legislation. He was later accused of misconduct and misuse of funds. We find no record of this handbill in OCLC though copies may be hiding in various collections of ephemera. Rare and ephemeral. unknown
