Quella di Adam Smith è una delle grandi figure della tradizione culturale europea, il filosofo morale da cui provengono alcune delle tesi fondamentali dell'economia politica moderna. Nella sua storia del pensiero economico (pubblicata in due volumi nel 1995), Murray N. Rothbard vede però nelle opere di Smith l'origine di molti errori che avrebbero dominato la riflessione sull'economia e lo stesso liberalismo: dalla teoria del valore-lavoro (che attraverso David Ricardo condurrà a Karl Marx) fino al rigetto dei diritti naturali. Mentre esalta il pensiero dell'età medievale e della prima età moderna (da Pierre de Jean Olivi fino ai filosofi della seconda Scolastica), lo studioso americano sferra quindi un attacco durissimo all'autore della "Ricchezza delle Nazioni", a cui contrappone personalità pure assai meno note quali Cantillon e Turgot. I due capitoli della sua History in cui Rothbard esamina il pensiero smithiano e i suoi immediati sviluppi sono ora offerti al lettore italiano. Curato da Paolo Zanotto, questo libro propone una lettura provocatoria e quanto mai originale del grande economista scozzese, dando un punto di vista inedito su tante questioni cruciali della cultura occidentale.
