L’opera, il cui protagonista è un africano ridotto in schiavitù nel Suriname degli anni 1660, narra la vicenda di un amore infelice e si ispira alle esperienze dell’autrice durante un viaggio nell’allora neoacquisita colonia britannica del Suriname. È stato detto, in particolare da Virginia Woolf, che Aphra Behn fu la prima scrittrice professionista, cioè la prima donna della letteratura inglese a vivere esclusivamente dei suoi proventi. Se da un lato ciò non è del tutto vero, dall’altro Behn fu di certo la prima drammaturga professionista e uno dei primi romanzieri inglesi, a prescindere dal sesso. Anche se con tutta probabilità ne scrisse almeno uno prima, ’Oroonoko’ rimane uno dei più antichi romanzi in lingua inglese, uno dei primi scritti da una donna e occupa un posto privilegiato nella letteratura della Restaurazione inglese.
