187144237Baltimore 1871. Very good folded marginal finger soiling leaves inlaid to reinforce borders. 2 pp. Bifolium. 8 x 10 inches. A letter of recommendation from Adam E. King Baltimore customs official to President Ulysses S. Grant recommending Edward Bradford for the U.S. District Court for Delaware: "Mr. B's labor in the cause of education and his untiring advocacy of the Constitutional Amendments as well as his earnest support of your Excellency are so well known that they need not be mentioned here." Dated and signed December 5 1871 just a short week before Grant did in fact nominate Bradford. Adam Eckfeldt King 1837-1910 served with five different Union Generals including Winfield Scott Hancock. He was promoted to Major in 1864 and Lieutenant Colonel in 1865 and was brevetted Brigadier General for "gallantry during the campaign of 1864 and distinguished good conduct throughout the war." Grant appointed him local appraiser for the Port of Baltimore in April 1869. Edward Green Bradford 1819-1884 had a long legal and political career before serving as United States Attorney for the District of Delaware a post that he held until 1866. He served in the District Court until his death in 1884. unknown

Red title plate with gilt banding and title.A well-preserved copy of a scarce book A Summary of Geography and History both ancient and modern Alexander Adam 24 June 1741 – 18 December 1809 was a Scottish teacher and writer on Roman antiquities. Alexander Adam was born near Forres in Moray the son of a farmer. From his earliest years he showed uncommon diligence and perseverance in classical studies notwithstanding many difficulties and privations. In 1757 he went to Edinburgh where he studied at the University of Edinburgh. His reputation as a classical scholar secured him a post as assistant at Watson's Hospital and the headmastership in 1761. In 1764 he became private tutor to Alexander Kincaid afterwards Lord Provost of Edinburgh by whose influence he was appointed in 1768 to the rectorship of the High School on the retirement of Mr Matheson whose substitute he had been for some time before. From this period he devoted himself entirely to the duties of his office and to the preparation of his numerous works on classical literature. His popularity and his success as a teacher are strikingly illustrated by the great increase in the number of his pupils many of whom subsequently became distinguished men among them being Walter Scott Lord Brougham and Francis Jeffrey. He succeeded in introducing the study of Greek into the curriculum of the school notwithstanding the opposition of the university headed by Principal William Robertson. In 1780 the University of Edinburgh conferred upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. He lived his final years at 39 George Square. He died after an illness of five days during which he occasionally imagined himself still at work his last words being "It grows dark boys you may go". He is buried near his home in the small graveyard of St. Cuthbert's Chapel of Ease on Chapel Street usually known as Buccleuch Parish Church. The grave lies on the north wall. The text treats of the medical history of mineral baths sulfur springs chalybeate springs saline springs directions for taking the waters baths exercise and diet. The binding is one of the first cloth bindings with printed covers. Books bound in full cloth date from the 1760s onwards. These early cloth bindings were generally of coarsely woven hessian cloth or canvas and used most frequently on school textbooks. Publishers' full cloth bindings date from the early to mid-1820s William Pickering being one of the early innovators. In 1829 gilt was used to label the spines on these cloth-bound volumes and by 1834 the cloth was finally embellished with an illustration. I can find no books in the bookbinding literature with printed cloth covers of an earlier date. The boards are scuffed scratched and marked by shelving and handling. They are worn about the edges from shelving. They are classically placid. They are also secure and sure. The contents are mild-mannered. There are smears blotches flushes of foxing throughout. Nonetheless the pages are clean clear tight alert convivial companionable competent pleasing. fk.
