252163Edinburgh: A. & C. Black. unbound. very good. Bartholomew J. Map. Color lithograph. Image measures 16.5" x 22". Repair to center fold left margin. Otherwise in very good condition.<br/><br/> This detailed and lucid map of Canada is the east sheet of a larger grouping of maps by A.C. Black. It describes the area around the Gulf of St. Lawrence including Newfoundland Nova Scotia Prince Edward Island New Brunswick and the Anticosti Islands. Published circa 1854 the map was made only a few years after Nova Scotia became the first colony in British North America and in the British Empire to achieve self-governance. Notable features include the demarcation of sand banks in the Atlantic Ocean. Red lines indicate railways railways under construction and canals as per a key above the title pointing to the growing industry in this region. The map is in very good condition with some wear to the center seam. Otherwise very clean. Adam Black 1784-1874 was a Scottish publisher and politician who with his brother Charles founded the A & C Black publishing company. Together they published a wide range of materials including atlases medical books and the 7th 8th and 9th editions of the Encyclopedia Britannica. This map is a fine example of their work.<br/><br/> A. & C. Black unknown books
1888W0912MAToronto Ontario: William Bryce 1888. Original blue cloth oblong gilt with fair amount of rubbing. Tipped-in over the title page is a facimile of a letter from Windsor Castle May 2 1887 reading: "Sir Henry Ponsonby is commanded by the Queen to thank Mr . Bryce for the Views of Canada which he has presented to Her Majesty." The subtitle of the book is Bryce's Tourists' Illustrated Handbook to the Canadian Dominion. There is considerable soiling of the margins of the text pages and a pencilled name of prior owner. The 60 photos in black and white are 5 3/4X3 3/4 and are mounted on pale orange paper ruled in red. They are all present. Glued onto the back pastedownis a map of the Dominion of Canada railway connections from the Atlantic to the Pacific. It seems to be quite complete although a small cornder is missing under the cartouche and there are three or four tiny tears at the edges. It is fragile but all there and is replete with mathematical figurings on the back in pencil not interfering with the printed information on the other side. The gutters are starting but are strong and holding. An interesting group of pictures. . Unknown. Cloth. Fair/No D.j. 8vo. Trade. William Bryce Hardcover books

His son Adolphe Adam is known as the composer of the ballet Giselle.<br>"Dussek is an unjustly neglected composer. Admittedly some of his more insignificant works. are trivial and deservedly forgotten but there is a body of piano sonatas piano concertos and chamber works that are of sufficient musical worth to be performed and enjoyed today. His music seems to have been received with enthusiasm in his own time; reviews of the original editions in the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung praise Dussek's originality and expressiveness and the appropriateness to the piano of his melody harmony and scoring . Most of his works were reprinted at least once and some as many as ten times some important works appeared in as many as three different editions by Breitkopf & Härtel alone who issued a 12-volume collected edition of his works just after his death."
