The author's exposition of the intellectual background of the Renaissance, the Reformation and the modern western world will be of interest to theologians, philosophers and historians alike. Challenging the conventional notion that these often malevolent demons belong exclusively to a realm of folklore or superstition separate from Christianity, the author looks at beliefs about the exotica and the Orthodox Devil to demonstrate the interdependency of doctrinal and local religion.330p.illus bibliography, index. "Wallace [1841-1919] a newspaper correspondent, editor and author was engaged in qualifying for a professorship in Comparative Law in Germany when he accepted a private invitation to visit Russia. Wallace had expressed a desire to study the Ossetes, a peculiar Aryan tribe in the Caucasus. However, he remained in Russia nearly six years, studying not the Ossetes but the Russians. He familiarized himself thoroughly with the life of the people by settling for long periods in remote villages. In 1876 he returned to England where he published the above volume, his most famous work. It met with instant success and went through several editions and was translated into many languages. It was twice revised by Wallace (1905 & 1912) and remains the standard authority on Russia before the 1917 revolution." Scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! RUSSIA/1

.In this second edition of his acclaimed study of Mount Athos (for which he was awarded the 2002 Criticos Prize) the author takes the opportunity to revise and update his text and also to add a completely new chapter documenting the changes that have occurred in the twelve years since its first publication. The renewal that took place in the last quarter of the twentieth century can now be seen in its historical context and has been succeeded by a period of spiritual and cultural maturity. Not for the first time, in a world beset by political upheaval and economic turmoil, the Mountain stands as a symbol of continuity and stability, a spiritual powerhouse offering refreshment to all who turn to it.This is a history of Mount Athos from pagan antiquity to the present day.Second revised edition originally published:2002 Yale University Press.288 p. illus [some col.] Book

Ilarion Makariopolski: Metropolitan of Turnovo on the occasion of 50 years since his death. Six copies in WorldCat; OCLC: 222059532 / 34375853. Hilarion of Makariopolis (born Stoyan Stoyanov Mihaylovski), (1812-1875) was a 19th-century Bulgarian cleric and one of the leaders of the struggle for an autonomous Bulgarian church. Born in Elena in 1812 in a prominent Bulgarian family, Mihaylovski received substantial schooling for the period, initially in his native town and later at the Greek school in Arbanasi. He became a monk in the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos in 1832 and continued his education at the school of noted Greek enlightener Theophilos Kairis on the island of Andros, later studying for two years at a famous high school in Athens. A close friend of Georgi Rakovski, Ilarion Makariopolski took an active part in the Macedonian revolutionary society. Since 1844 he guided the Bulgarian church struggle from Constantinople together with Neofit Bozveli, and was exiled to Mount Athos between 1845 and 1850. On 3 April 1860, during Easter service in Constantinople, Ilarion intentionally did not mention the name of the Patriarch of Constantinople, which, according to the canon law, is an act of throwing off his authority. A decision of the Patriarchate sent Makariopolski back to Mount Athos into exile in 1861-1864 together with the bishops that supported him, Auxentius of Veles and Paisius of Plovdiv. After the Ottoman government of Abdülaziz granted the right to establish an autonomous Bulgarian Exarchate for the Bulgarian dioceses under the Sultan's firman promulgated on February 28 (the Julian calendar), 1870, Ilarion was a member of the Provisional Mixed Exarchic Council and of the first Synod. Upon the unilateral declaration by Antim I of an independent national church of the Bulgarians in May 1872, Ilarion was anathematized by the Patriarchal Synod. The condemnation was later affirmed at the Council in Constantinople in September the same year. Since 1872 he was Metropolitan of Tarnovo and died in Constantinople on 4 June 1875. He was buried in the yard of the Bulgarian St Stephen Church in the city. Ilarion Ridge in Breznik Heights on Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica is named for Ilarion Makariopolski. (Source: Wikipedia).

This work was written with the intention of being a history of the past 162 years of the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox community describing its spiritual and social leaders both clergical and laymen i.e. patriarchs, metropolitans, patriarchal delegates, chorepiscopuses, and the monks and priests, deacons, teachers and the board of directors, all who gave their worthy service and their ministry activities to be presented to you, worthy readers; and we do so with great pleasure. Around the year 1844, under the leadership of Mor Korillos (Patriarch Yakup II.), a few Syrian Orthodox families settled in Istanbul. Today there are nearly three thousand Syrian Orthodox families who have created their own niche in the mosaic which is Istanbul. Through the warm relationship that they developed amongst the local people, and in full co-operation with other citizens, they have given service worthy of the honor and glory that is Great Istanbul with their rich cultural, business and industrial activities. Today the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox Diocese holds great importance among other Syrian communities throughout the world. Istanbul had an important place in the history of the Byzantines and the Ottomans and today continues to be an important city for Turkey and the world alike. It has also attracted the interest of Syrian Fathers since the time of the second Ecumenical Council held in Constantinople (modern day Istanbul) in the year 381 AD. During the Ottoman era, however, the Syrian patriarchs came to Istanbul to receive the firman (imperial edict) from the Ottoman Sultans in dealing with the affairs of the community.
