.In this second edition of his acclaimed study of Mount Athos (for which he was awarded the 2002 Criticos Prize) the author takes the opportunity to revise and update his text and also to add a completely new chapter documenting the changes that have occurred in the twelve years since its first publication. The renewal that took place in the last quarter of the twentieth century can now be seen in its historical context and has been succeeded by a period of spiritual and cultural maturity. Not for the first time, in a world beset by political upheaval and economic turmoil, the Mountain stands as a symbol of continuity and stability, a spiritual powerhouse offering refreshment to all who turn to it.This is a history of Mount Athos from pagan antiquity to the present day.Second revised edition originally published:2002 Yale University Press.288 p. illus [some col.] Book

Our forefathers, the pioneers who came to Canada in the late 1890s and early 1900s, were free to follow the Faith of their Forefathers - the Russian Greek Orthodox Faith. In this book, through the efforts of many, we are presenting the histories of twenty-five Patriarchal Parishes in Canada, that continue to live in the faith of their forefathers." - Introduction. "Wallace [1841-1919] a newspaper correspondent, editor and author was engaged in qualifying for a professorship in Comparative Law in Germany when he accepted a private invitation to visit Russia. Wallace had expressed a desire to study the Ossetes, a peculiar Aryan tribe in the Caucasus. However, he remained in Russia nearly six years, studying not the Ossetes but the Russians. He familiarized himself thoroughly with the life of the people by settling for long periods in remote villages. In 1876 he returned to England where he published the above volume, his most famous work. It met with instant success and went through several editions and was translated into many languages. It was twice revised by Wallace (1905 & 1912) and remains the standard authority on Russia before the 1917 revolution." Scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! RUSSIA/1

New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (32 x 23 cm). In English. Color ills. 397 p. Splendor & pageantry. Textile treasures from the Armenian Orthodox Churches of Istanbul. "This collection of textile treasures of the Armenian Churches of Istanbul is being introduced to world textile historians and art lovers for the very first time. Like the items the book introduces, the book too is a treasure, not only for textile historians, but anyone cultivating an interest in the culture, art and religious forms of Anatolia and Anatolian Armenians. Over 170 plates illustrate the textile treasury of the Armenian Patriarchate in Istanbul that have been executed in embroidery, appliqué, techniques of textile printing, and painting. We are amazed by the love, devotion and unique experiences that women artisans stitched into these pieces, while a closer look leads us to understand that their artistic visions were rooted in, and developed out of, Eastern traditions. The book also provides a brief historical background of the Istanbul Patriarchate and its Istanbul churches, discusses the iconographies of the objects and describes their techniques of production. The reference catalogue is highly useful as a reference for scholars, while the translations of the inscriptions on the pieces open a window to all readers onto the personal lives of the people who contracted and gifted these items to the Church."
