Birkbeck was an English gentleman farmer who emigrated to the United States, going on to write a travel book. Following this journey, his correspondence included very detailed accounts of aspects of American and emigrant life. This work brings together letters by Birkbeck to friends and an epistolary exchange with future émigrés, who inquire about the price of cabins, American Indians, and so on...The book is an important source of information on what exactly emigrants to America should expect. A la suite de ce voyage, des lettres lui parvinrent sur des points très précis de la vie américaine et des émigrants. L'ouvrage rassemble donc des lettres écrites par Birbeck à des amis et un échange épistolaire avec de futurs émigrants, qui interrogent Birbeck sur le prix des cabanes, sur les Indiens... Le livre fourmille de renseignements précieux sur ce qui attend précisément les émigrants en Amérique.

L'exemplaire a été truffé d'un frontispice du voyage en Sibérie dont l'Histoire et description du Kamtchatka était la seconde partie et dont la première était de l'abbé Chappe ; l'ensemble parut en 1768. Reliure en demi veau blond ca 1920. Dos à nerfs janséniste. Bon exemplaire. La presqu'île de Kamtchatka est une péninsule volcanique située à l'extrême orient de la Russie, longue de 1200 km. Elle a été visitée par des explorateurs russes dès 1600 et des colons ne tardèrent pas à s'y installer. Le récit informatif conte par le menu les habitants, leurs moeurs et leurs coutumes, la seconde partie du premier volume est consacrée à la description géographique ; le second volume rapporte les duretés du climat, les caractéristiques de cette terre volcanique sujette aux séismes, la faune et la flore ainsi que le commerce et l'économie de la presqu'île, puis son histoire. La narration de voyage est très succinte mais fait la part belle à toutes sortes de descriptions et de témoignages dans un style neutre et presque administratif. Kracheninnikow prit part à l'expédition de Bering en Sibérie et au Kamtchatka, cet ouvrage est le résultat de ses observations qui permirent d'établir de nouvelles cartes plus fiables de la région. Plats ornés d'un riche décor Rocaille, à froid et à chaud, avec la couronne du Brésil sur le plat supérieur et les lettres S.P.D.F. dessous, les armes du Brésil sur le plat inférieur. Tranches dorés. Roulette à froid intérieure. gardes moirées bleues. Restauration d'une bande papier verte entre les deux pages de garde, au début et à la fin du livre, avec des coutures jaunes apparentes. Quelques rousseurs pâles éparses sur un papier bien blanc. Frottements en coiffes avec petit manque au mors supérieur en tête. Très bel exemplaire, malgré quelques minimes défauts. Le nom en bas au milieu du contreplat : G. Leuzinger, et l'adresse correspondante sur le second contreplat : Rua do Ouvidor 36, n'est pas le nom d'un relieur, mais celle d'un imprimeur et photographe Suisse qui s'est installé à Rio de Janeiro en 1832. Le Rua de Ouvidor 36 est en effet l'adresse de sa boutique. Celui-ci s'est rendu très célèbre par ses photographies du Brésil qui sont les toutes premières que nous possédons aujourd'hui. On peut penser que Leuzinger a fait venir cette partition de Paris et l'a faite relier pour la vendre dans sa boutique, il s'agissait peut-être d'une commande impériale spéciale. Richard Coeur-de-Lion est le meilleur et le plus célèbre des opéras de Grétry, de celui qui fut le maître de l'opéra comique dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe. [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND]

François Levaillant (1753-1824) est un explorateur et un ornithologue français. En 1781, le trésorier de la compagnie hollandaise des Indes Orientales l'envoie dans la province du Cap, en Afrique du sud. Il collecte alors de nombreux spécimens dans la région, rapportant plus de 2000 peaux d'oiseaux en France. Un second voyage (1783-1784) le mènera au nord de la rivière Orange, dans le Namaqualand. Il fera paraître plus tard l'Histoire naturelle des oiseaux d'Afrique. Tous ses livres connurent un grand succès à travers l'Europe. Sa collection ornithologique rejoindra le musée de Leyde, la France ne s'en portant pas acquéreur. Certains noms d'oiseaux qu'il a imaginé sont encore en usage. Quelque temps plus tard, des espèces porteront son nom, comme le Coucou de Levaillant. Ce second voyage décrit le Namaqualand, Damaraland, Bechuanaland et le désert de Kalahari. An important document on the history of Canada and the United States. The work begins by looking at the causes of the conflict between Great Britain and France over the territory of Ohio. In essence, 1756 marked the beginning of the Seven Years' War or French and Indian War, a war of conquest to establish the legitimate occupation of the territories. This war overran the territory from Virginia and Nova Scotia to the region of the Canadian lakes, with some American Indians fighting on the side of the British, and some on the side of the French. Shebbeare reviews the British defeats, mistaken policy and the generals in Canada, the intervention of American militias and Washington. The author frankly accuses the British government (Kings and Ministers) of having failed to protect the British colonies in America and predicts the downfall of Britain, giving examples of jealousy and misguided policy in Canada. As well as this accusation, the author examines the situation of Britain in Europe, the treaty with Russia, the difficulties of the House of Hanover and France and once again accuses his country of ruining itself with disastrous political decisions. A picture of this book is available upon reques The author was friends with Benjamin Franklin and Joseph Priestly and was a fellow of the Royal Society. An American, he was accused of spying for both Britain and United States in the American Revolution. According to Casey Wood, 220: "One of the earliest and most informative accounts of the flora and fauna of the Guianas." Sabin 3106: "A very useful and entertaining work." Field 17: 'The especial subject of the author's inquiries regarding the Indians is the nature and use of the Wourali Poison, with which their weapons are charged'. Cox II, 281. Not only a description of the natural history of the area, but includes a description of the native peoples and geography, rivers and villages. Some copies have the contents pages bound at the end which was arbitrary. Sabin's copy had the contents pages at the beginning as does this copy, which is the preferred position for contents pages.
